building in the cheap end, would there be
any significant advantage jumping from a
very cheap XP-2500 (running "3200") and
up to one of the cheapest 64-bit on 754 socket, guess the total-price would double
also as the 754 MB´s cost a bit more

Not so sure about the real low-end 64 bit athlons, but I notice an enourmous difference between the XP 2.8 GigaHz processor to my current 3.4 GigaHz XP64.

Where my 2.8 would spike, my current cpu kinda just scratches an itch and carries on. I love it.
I was tempted to buy an opteron or fx51 but the difference in price (at the time...may have changed in the last few months?) didn't warrant it, and to be honest I'd have been more than comfortable with a 3 GigaHz machine. I think it'll last for as long as I'm paying for it. It better! hehe
I was tempting myself to get windows 64 bit when it's finished properly but I can't see as the performance gain would warrant the hassle/expense. 64 bit over 32 bit has been a leap for me anyway, I'd recommend!

Well at least AMD wrote x86 instruction sets to handle 32bit legacy stuff.Intel has broken away and and uses EPIC which has been proven to run our 32bit software poorly.
One clear advantage with AMD64 is the amount of ram it will handle,,gigs of the stuff,,so I guess if you got 32 stereo tracks with a video line its worth it.
Overall though its mainly for precision data which doesn't really help us audio junkies until more of our audio apps are written to 64bit.
I look at it this way..when Digi starts writing in 64bit we'll know were there....
