If you only had $100 what would you purchase for a powerful sound studio?

I would start off with:
Host:
energyXT: http://www.xt-hq.com
VSTi's:
1) EVM Synths: http://www.sinte-virtual.com/evmsynths/synpack1.htm
2) Neuropack: http://www.psychicmodulation.com/neuro3.html
MIDI:
Fractal Tune Smithy: http://tunesmithy.co.uk/

And I'd swipe a copy of ComputerMusic from my local bookstore for the groovy CMuzys + plugins.
Those plus all the freebie VST's on the Net would just about keep a person set for life.

What would you pick??

eXT would be an awesome choice. If it's for a newbie, though, I'd still go with:

$80 (for now) Tracktion
$12 Computer Music Mag

Plus all the great freebies.

If I was doing it on that budget, then I'd get Cakewalk Home Studio V2, FLStudio FruityLoops edition, or Tracktion. Part of it depends on the demos - I have both FLStudio Producer and Sonar now, so that explains my choices.

I like EnergyXT as a plugin, but it's so different - more so than Tracktion - that I just don't know that I'd want to sequence in it.

Then I'd get the "typical" free synths, and the freebie effects from Kjaerhus and ConcreteFX (among others).

Didnt spend a cent. And I think you could acheive anything you want as a musician, perhaps not the top engineering results... but for 0$ you cant beat it! Go donate to smex and toby ;)

actually, for $0 you could do quite a lot with the demo version of FLstudio (to make loops), freebie vsti's, and the demo version of acid to sequence the loops ( the 10 track, no FX version).

if only $100, then i would just buy FLstudio producer and nothing else.

Kreatives' Kristal
Buzz
Bram Bos' Hammerhead and Tuareg.
Add free plugins to taste.
Yeah, love MiniHost.
Probably Bome's Mouse Keyboard, Rally KB, Analog X Virtualpiano.

Keep the $100.

PS I forgot to add PQNAudio's VSTSeq.

If i had just $100 to set up with... I'd probably be using cracks (I am ofcourse jesting)! Seriously though, you can get such good stuff for free now you should be able to do ok if you're crafty. Firstly, get Audiomulch, Buzz and Audicity. Then, go get as many free fx and synths as you can find! Maybe a copy of Cubasis would be a good move. If you plan to get a soundcard then many have some software included (Creative cards used to be packaged with Cubasis, Wavelab Light and Recycle). I'd also go a hunt for samples - there are loads of freebies that are really good quality. Save you having to shell out for drum sounds etc.
