Hi I'm currently in a first year course of an electronic music and sound engineering degree which finishes at the beginning of December. I am looking for work experience in those 4 months until the second year. I've emailed local foley studios and small studios but was thinking I could maybe help out somewhere online? Can anybody think of companies I should be targeting to gain experience? I mean my only job now is cheffing which I really don't enjoy so if the ideas people have are for something that'd lead to full time work I'd happily do that. (I know I sound naive as these types of jobs aren't as easy as just applying to work in a supermarket).

the majority of people get a foot in the door as a tea boy or messenger, being useful around the place.
chatting with the engineers, then one day one of them might ask you to help out. plugging in and setting up.
it can be a long hard slog before you get to show what you can actually do.
and i dont say this to discourage you but to give you an idea of what to expect if you dont already have contacts, but if it's something your heart is set on, id argue, provided you dont have kids and a mortgage type responsibilities it's definitely worth it.
just understand it's going to take commitment and a lot of time doing unrelated work.

At least it was like that in the 70/80s... In that role I once had the honor to record a little intro for The Cult which they needed for their live sets, and wasn’t part of their album.
It was a special experience to be in the same room as Conny Plank or Gareth Jones etc... But mainly it was what you describe, being useful somehow...

it was like that just a few years back when i did it too. doing nothing more than delivering herbs got me in a door that lead all the way to meeting folk like prince :o
basically i dropped off some weed, got to know studio guy, got to sit in on some sessions, one band asked me to do their live sound one gig, which lead to the club taking me on for a bit, which then got me in the door of the arena :)
all in under a year.
and it was awesome, would still be doing it if my physical self hadn't packed up
