Do controllers control Cubase automation parameters?

Hi

I have my M-Audio Pro 88 but was wondering:

Are the buttons on my controller supposed to alter the values in Cubase. I do not see anything on screen changing, although when a pan left on the controller I do hear it.
I did press "recall" and get presets 07 installed. (Cubase SL2.20.33)

As well, the volume fader for channel1, for example, affects the heard volume for channel 1 but when I try to WRITE this as automation nother is transferred to Cubase itself.

Confused.

I wanna CONTROL everything !!! LOL
