Believe it or not, it's still available as a demo download. It's a dead-end Garage Band competitor/wannabe with no export except to Cubase and no support for third-party VSTs if I remember correctly. I thought it was one of the best DAW interfaces ever in terms of ease of use. At least as far as it went.

I was completely convinced that this was the future Cubase interface and workflow, but sadly IMHO, it was not to be. Kind of dated looking now, but it wasn't about the looks so much as simplicity and ease. It operates much like Live and Bitwig, heavy on bottom pane use: mixer, track effects, performance panel, audio and MIDI editors. If it allowed third-party VSTs and stem export, I might even consider using it for quick and dirty. Alas...

Hah! No sooner do I post this than I read bout Catalina effectively killing it on the Mac.

I remember it being released, but never used it. It definitely seemed like an attempt to cash in on the idea of the “easy” and “beginner” music software market made notable by GarageBand. I forgot about it until your thread. I am not remotely surprised that it was abandoned. Did it even get beyond version 1?

Who remembers Steinberg Remix?

Basically a cut down ripped off Ableton Live rebadged by Steinberg.

Scrubbed that off the internet quickly didn't they!

Those colours!

:tu:

There's a copy going for about 200 quid if you really need it *:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Steinberg-Remi ... B00006LIG5

*
Ableton 3 with a colour scheme that will give you eye cancer.

From amazon reviews (2003):

Remix is cool. As others have already said, it is a cut down version of Ableton Live - Remix has only 8 tracks as opposed to unlimited (?) tracks in Live.
For the price this is an excellent piece of software. As a "taster" for Live it is superb.

Guess I don't feel so deprived for still running Ableton 9.

:borg:

Downloaded and installed it for shits and giggles. From 2002 and it still works!

Yes, that’s Sequel 3. It’s more advanced than you’d think with Elastique stretching. Only the fact that it didn’t allow third party plugins killed it for me. My needs are simple. It’s simple. A little too simple, but not by much.

Regardless, it’s the interface that impressed me.

I demo’ed Sequel3 when I was looking for a new DAW. I think that it was a failed attempt at cashing in on the Magix Music Maker crowd. You get the Sequel samples in Cubase Artist though and they’re not bad, just a bit dated sounding.

It’s technically not a ripoff because Ableton coded it for Steinberg. Like how Magix Music Maker had a stripped down version of Logic Platinum.

Steinberg Sequel 3 is now free. It supports 3rd party VSTs. You can export projects to wav files. But its 32bit and only supports VST3. Cubase 11 cannot open project files from Sequel 3.

From a quick test using the update installer (as it's a much smaller download than the full one) it appears this works fine on macOS even though it's advertised as Windows-only (tested in High Sierra).

The only gotcha is you must use a copy of eLicencer Control that supports 32-bit. The current one is 64-bit only.

Simpler, more innocent times in VST-land. :hihi:
