One of the greats - particularly for Germanic opera - she sang my favourite version of Richard Strauss's 4 Last Songs

She will certainly be missed. Also sung in Vangelis Mithodea.

Yes - see first post - one of the most sublime song cycles - sung with such tenderness it makes me weep

Jessye said of Vangelis:
"My first impression of meeting Vangelis was that it was unusual and just altogether marvellous to find a grown man so full of life. He has the enthusiasm and the exuberance of a person who’s just beginning life, rather than a person who’s already had so much experience in so many wonderful happenings already; and that is a thing that still impresses me about this person. There is a love of life and a love of being on this planet; that’s just inspiring."
Such a person to see and say that.

That clip of Jessye as Sieglinde from Act 3 of Die Walkure while powerful is rather short given the ending of the opera really belongs to Wotan and Brunnhilde, but here's a longer one from Act 1.

And to post a clip of a wonderful not often mentioned performance of hers, but that is among the concerts I wish I could have attended (if only I'd been in Tokyo at the time :hihi: ):
