Hello everyone nice to be here.

I may get everyone to laugh hard now since I might be in the wrong place to ask these questions:

I´ve got a Mac G4 and Logic Platinum 5.5 hooked up with a FireLan external soundcard and a Yamaha Motif 6 external midi-synth..

If I want to expand my abilities to write music that sounds more real, such as drums etc, can I download let´s say, the Kingston drumkit and integrate it on my synth so I can browse the menues on it and find the kit there, and then use it on the synth?

Hope you get what Im saying..

I´ve always been using hardware synths, not software.. but, is that what this is all about in this place? Software machines?

Really need some help to figure things out since I desperately need NEW sounds into my music.. such as drums and piano..

/Daniel

fraid i dont know the software your using or to be honest whats available for the mac?
but you should in theory be able to do what your after if you have a software sampler.

your definitely in the right place and welcome aboard

look forward to seeing you around 8)

For the most part softsynths are virtual instruments that are managed and "played" by what I like to call file management software, i.e. Cubase SX/SL, which I gladly use and enjoy.

The hardware keyboards are seen as controlling the DAW software that will assign programs and sound banks for output.

maybe, depending on where your at...

well the kingston drums come with a preset for the exs24 isn't that the sampler built into logic? then all you'd have to do is open up an exs24 and load that preset. Alternatively, there's a soundfont version, so any soundfont playing VST (I'm not a mac user so I don't know of any, but somebody will be along shortly ;)) should be able to play it. Tbph I've not used logic or a mac really, so I'm not much use for details :)

If you can get a Mac version of an instrument, you can load it into Logic and use it there, with your Motif keyboard controlling it.. but you won't be able to browse patches etc. from the Motif keyboard, you're stuck doing that on your computer. You should be able to SWITCH patches, though. It might be possible to set up an environment that would display the patches as you changed 'em from your synth, but you won't get the same functionality as on the Motif.

VST instruments run on the computer, not your keyboard, I know that might be something you already know but I feel morally obliged to say it. Your Motif will only act to control the synth, not actually assist in making the sounds.

Just dig out the Logic manual (painful, I know) and read up on how to use VST instruments or the supplied sampler (which isn't a half bad sampler, actually). It'll take some time to wrap your head around it, but you'll be amazed at what you can do once you come up to speed! :D

Thanks for all your response.

Well, basicly what I want is to get the sounds (wav works with mac?) into the synth so I can browse it on the screen and choose the sound and use it on the piano-"buttons" :P

exs24 is compatible with logic yes, but do I place the Kingston drumkit i.e. on the harddrive in a folder on my Mac or in some way, in the hardware synth?

You guys are gonna lose it with me haha.. Im a total noobie to Mac and these advanced musicmachines :)

Hi Inanimate,

I'd like to add my welcome if I may.

I use Cubase SX as my host and N.I. Knotakt as my sampler on my G4. Very much the same idea...

Say you have a sampled pad sound - load your sampler as an instrument in Logic. Next load the pad sounds into your sampler and you should be able to play the pad with your hardware KB depending on how you have Logic set-up.

Its the very same for drum sounds - I like N.I's Battery (drum sampler) but there are loads around both free and demos of commercial software. Very much a try before you buy question.

I hope this helps - dont be afraid to ask for help. We will if we can :)

Cheers,
Dave

Hehe, I love the warm welcome I STILL get here :)

well you say: load your sampler as an instrument?
My question: the sampler is exactly what? I think I´ve got it integrated in Logic :)
and then you said: Load the sounds into your sampler..
Question: do I load the wav´s or some file that combines them?

That would be your exs24.

Open Logic and create a new blank project (is that what they are called in Logic?) or song. Add a track and in that track load the EXS24. go to Edit the EXS - It should be from here you load your wav/aiff files....

Perhaps someone with Logic experience would step up to help here...

Best of luck!

Okey, that helped me understanding abit more..

What I´ve got sofar, is that VST cannot be loaded into the hardware synth, you select the sound from the software somehow..
And probably how to load it..

Well, I´ve got some pianosounds that was already in the synth when I got it; PowerGrand, Jazzgrand, Dark Grand and Widecomp.. well those are the ones that I´ve ever used since the other tend to sound like Super Mario a bit :S

Can you recommend an extremely good pianosound that sounds real and not as plastic as the others.
URL?

Thx again

You might try the SoundFont VST for Apple:
http://www.kvr-vst.com/get/1062.html

and load it with any SF2 file (do a google on "piano soundfont" or get a GM soundfont from hammerhead)

Can't answer how to "load" all that, since I don't have Logic. Read some manuals and just have a play around...

Well, as allready stated in this topic, EXS24 is integrated into logic and if you´d want to use the kingston drums for example (they do come with an EXS24 "instruments file") you just put the actual "sounds" (wav, aiff whatever) somewhere on your HD and then you put the instruments file in your "sampler instruments" folder where you installed EXS24.

When you choose the instrument file from the load menu in EXS24 it will autmatically search your HD for the sounds and load them up...keymapped and all (depending on the programming of the sample makers)

It really is very easy!

Also, the Malmsjö SF2 is one of the best sounding soundfonts that I have heard! it has a great piano!

1) That soundfont (what is that btw?) is made for OSX and I´ve got OS 9..

Second of all, where do I find "the" ESX24 in logic?
Understans what complete beginner I am people :)

Do I when all of this is finished, select the sound via the synth or this soundfont program Im supposed to download?
