hi guys,

writing here in hope that someone's got a similar problem, and has a solution for it. basically the PC doesn't shut down when you select "shut down" from the Start menu. it just goes to the screen saying WINDOWS IS SHUTTING DOWN... and then nothing happens:( and it happens every time! sometimes when i switch the PC for a short time it will shutdown OK. also, if i do Restart at any time during the work, then it will Shutdown fine in the end. it quite annoying, when i have to restart every time i want to shut down

the system is WIN XP with SP1, no driver conflicts or anything. someone told me, that maybe its something to do with BIOS settings?
so , if anyone can provide some information , i would really appreciate any help .

The same thing happens to me too, but intermittently. It doesn't happen every time. I haven't yet figured out what causes it.

Slightly annoying, because I have to manually switch my computer off when it happens (and the box is in the next room, with cables coming into the studio via a hole in the wall).

Otherwise it's just a minor annoyance - I only switch my computer off once a day.

I never had this problem but I've seen more than a few people experience this. Not very helpful but I just posted to show that I have seen this as well and it seems sort of a common occurance.

Also, i had this on 98/ME/XP, so its not OS related.

I'm not sure anymore.. I remember switching it off in xp but I might have done that as an extra measure. It is switched off in the bios as well.

Try xp first and if it doesn't help, why not try both.

In the past I have usually found this is due to a device driver refusing to stop. Usually a makers driver update eventually fixes it.

If the mouse pointer has frozen on the stopping screen (i.e. the mouse driver has shut down) I also tend to just power off at the mains switch.

shutdown problem in Win XP
