Hi, I have the Sound Canvas plugin and Roalnd D-50 plugin and liked them both a lot and they sound pretty similar, which makes sense because I've read the MT-32 was basically a downgraded D-50 and precussor to the Sound Canvas. I also get the sense that they do sound pretty dated- and will probably sound even more dated 10 years from now. It's not such a problem since I'm currently working on an album/soundtrack now that's supposed to sound like early 1990s music (with '95 or '96 being the cutoff point) but for future projects/more current sounding ones, it would be nice to have more Hi-Fi sample libraies/ romplers just in case.

I read a post here wehere someone said the JV-1080 (and expansions) are a lot higher quality than Sound Canvas, but after trying them with the Roland Cloud, I'm a bit dissapointed.

The JV ones do sound slightly better, but a lot of instrumets are ripped straight from the sound canvas (the "Oboe" and "Crystal" ones especially) There's also a weird intbetween with the JV plugins where they're a bit more realistic than a Sound Canvas/D-50 (whose instruments are so fake sounding, they almost sound like synthesizers), but the JV instruments are still very muffled/Low-Fi sounding and sound like crap without reverb/extra effects, which doesn't sit well with me at all.

So do you know of any more modern sample libraies/romplers/sample-based synths that have the same general vibe as the Sound Canvas/D-50 but more hi-fi (less muffled/muted sounding)"?

I'd also be open to finding ways to artifically lengthen very short sound samples/adding decay, (how I'm assuming the Sound Canvas/JV-1080 works).

Do you have Omnisphere? It has D-50 presets and they sound great. Or you can get Digital Synsations by UVI.

No, but I did read Eric Persing worked on D-50 and JVs and Omnisphere. But from the demos I've seen it didn't sound particularly cheesey or inherently cheesey like the D-50/Sound Canvas does. Or does that come down to more how Omnisphere is used/utilized?

Not sure how it compares, but the iPad Audio Kit D1 May also be worth checking out if you have an iPad. It’s pretty inexpensive.

I think part of it may be all the cool things you can do within Omnisphere adding to the overall sound, such as the granular functions, great effects, and everything else it can do.

Okay, not to seem rude, but aren't those Omnisphere's D-50 samples just like the originals (8-bit - very low sample rate)? Or did they have the original (high quality )recordings before they were down-sampled?

Without knowing specifically what you mean by "more HIFI", it's difficult to know exactly what you are looking for... Brighter? More "in your face" maybe?

I think the UVI Digital Synsations was a good suggestion... or the Neo-Soul FM-based stuff (I love the EX5) .... or Steinberg's Halion Sonic? Go to those sites and listen to the audio demos.

As others have said, Halion sonic, or Halion 4. If you want an amazing sound set look at Uvi falcon and Vintage Vault. Although it's based on alot of older digital and analog Synths, it's possibly the best your money can buy.

In particular the new Roland jupiter soundset is amazing.

A used Roland V-Synth XT module has a virtual D50 built in, and, if you don’t have it set to “original character” mode (whatever it’s called), it’s supposedly “cleaner” than the original hardware.

Everything else is just a sample player of sounds recorded from a D50.

Do you know of any romplers/sample libraries that are similar to a Roland D-50 or Roland Sound Canvas,but are more HiFi?
