I was wondering if anyone here has used or is using this host. I decided to download it yesterday to play around with ProTools a bit to see what the big deal is (although I realize that the biggest advantages come from the PT hardware).

Anyway, the documentation isn't great, but I was just trying to play around and try to get used the interface. I imported a wav file into one of the tracks and I noticed that it played back with a lot of clicks and pops. I was hoping that if anyone here had any experience with this and could, perhaps, help me straighten this out. (Also, I'm using an M-Audio MobilePre as my soundcard.)

Thanks in advance.

it in all probability wont work... thats PT for you...

the free version is very finiky with soundcards. I have never managed to get it to work... check out the DUC ( www.digidesign.com -> support -> user conference -> Pt Free ) for possible configurations..

Thanks for the pointer, Sidhu. I just read through those forums and you're right, it doesn't look good :(

I was actually thinking of getting an MBox at some point; doesn't look like such a good, all of a sudden.

I think it only works with Win98 :?

Believe it or not, I'm still on Win Me

I think it's supposed to work on that as well.

Yeah, which is pretty lame if you ask me.

The current Cubase line only works on Windoze XP.

M-Box is designed to work well with ProTools SE. That is the whole point to the hardware, it's equally important, if not more so than the software.

Considering a lot of VST developers are going to RTAS along with OSX, DXi, etc. ProTools SE isn't such a bad deal. 48 mono tracks audio, works with most commercial plugins and does virtual instruments and unlimited midi tracks.

The M-Box/ProTools output sounds very good and at it's price is reasonable. Most of the film and syncronization stuff is not on SE but then who's going to score for film using an M-Box? Also, the lack of tracks may turn some off. The actual electronics are quite good though and ProTools LE is a Rewire client so if you have something like FL or Orion Platinum you still have use of VSTs and DX.

I'm still using Sonar Producer as I prefer it but like what M-Box does.

I love my M-box. It's a tidy, powerful little package that works great. I love editing in the pro-tools environment also. I haven't really seen much else that compares to it on that front.

If you'd like to use VST stuff under, the Vst to Rtas plugin is another great choice, and works well.

Protools doesn't provide and notation interface for midi, but otherwise it's midi support is up to snuff.

I'd recommend it. (Yikes, this is my second Protools posting in one day)

Cheers.

i took the big jump and and bought mbox because my bro-in-law insisted that i would like it....couldn't run pt free on xp, but messed a bit with his apple system. i didn't really want the mbox, just the ability to use protools. it came bundled with live and reason.

so what is not cool is that i never use protools, totally different environment from orion platinum and actually they are not even the same tools. that being said, reason and live open up for me in orion plat (rewire), so i basically got two new toys, and o-plat will open up for me in protools as rewired, but i haven't actually messed yet with that too much as there is quite a jump in cpu usage. when i do play in protools, or when i'm messing around with my ks4 or fm7 or something, and select the digidesign asio driver, the sound from my headphones is phenominal. i haven't actually used mbox to run my monitors, but i would imagine that it wouldn't be quite as noisy as my audigy and probably sound great also.

i think i may have repeated what has already been said, but hey, it's reenforcement!
i'd rather have a mullet than a comb-over.
fortunately, i have neither.

I've got the MBox as well, and I must say I do not understand what the hubbub is about regarding Pro Tools. I'm running both Pro Tools LE 6.4 and SONAR Pro 3.1, and so far the only advantage I can see Pro Tools having is some *really* good plugins. The UI for Pro Tools is very confusing to me. I also have yet to find a single feature that Pro Tools offers that isn't offered in SONAR or SX or DP. I can see that it would definitely be possible to do high-quality work in PT but I'm sorry ... from where I sit, PT is hardly the market-dominating powerhouse it's reputed to be. SONAR and SX kick PT's hiney.

If only I could run RTAS plugins in SONAR ... now THAT would kick! :-D

As far as MBox goes, it's a serviceable USB audio I/O. It has some serious annoyances (poor MME support and no USB hubs allowed), but it also has really nice sounding pres in it, much nicer than the Mobile Pre (which I also own and use). The sound quality is very good, although my LynxOne still sounds much cleaner. It has a clever monitoring feature that weas nicely conceived. The ASIO driver is sorta crummy in the latency department (I can't get it below about 30ms on this laptop), but it seems stable and works well with SONAR. All in all, it's a decent (if overpriced) sound interface that I'm happy enough to use but probably wouldn't buy if I had the choice.
