MIDI VOLUME (VELOCITY PEDAL?) [EZ-AG]

I have a Yamaha EZAG midi guitar and I would like to control how the midi notes (velocity?) fades out. On the guitar, you can press the bridge and the metal strip on the neck to fade out the notes (otherwise the note stays on indefinately and yes its cumbersome). However, on most VSTI's this completely and suddenly stops all sound output. I find this very jarring. What I would like to do is control the duration of the fade so that it is more subtle. Is there a midi volume control or pedal board that someone could recommend to accomplish this. Also, I would like to filter out the low velocity notes that the EZ-AG generates when pressing on the frets.

Again, any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Isn't that only in the "fretting notes only" mode? I thought that the free-play mode had no such problems.

I can only make this comment based on the materials I've read: I'm thinking of getting one, but haven't yet found a shop to test-drive one, or a mail-order company that carries them with a money-back guarantee.

If you have an MFX-capable host (Cubase SX, Cakewalk products), I could do a filter plug-in for you, or your host may be able to do this already. Please post more info!

Apparently there are three song-based coordination exercise modes:

1) The guitar plays the "chords" for you, and you have to strum to generate the rhythm.

2) The guitar generates strum rhythm data, but you have to fret the proper notes.

3) You have to both fret notes and strum. (and the guitar plays accompaniment)

Though now that I think about it, the problem may come from how the soft-synth interprets incoming MIDI data. As you mentioned, fretting a note will generate a low-velocity Note On message. Plucking a string while fretting creates another Note On message. Then releasing the fret will create a Note Off message.

But that means you're only getting one Note Off message per every two Note On messages. So some soft-synths might interpret that as the note still being on! You'll have to test with a variety of synths to see if they all behave the same.

At any rate, if you do have an MFX-capable host, then check out my PortDiag and SustainFix plugins at [url=http://www.tencrazy.com/]my site[/quote]. The first will let you see the MIDI data being generated, and the other will massage the Note Off messages in various ways that could possibly help (check both the last two boxes and it will send out two styles of Note Off, for instance).

Thanks for the info on the MFX plugs. I think the "play modes" only apply when playing one
of the built in songs. I'm not playing with
accompianment so do the play modes work without
a "song" being activated?

I was just wondering if it had been accidentally activated somehow. Probably not, but it was just something that presented itself as a possibility (with my only having read the online information).

Otherwise, it's probably the 2 On + 1 Off message thing, so do some of those checks when you get the chance.

if your host is able to use mfx, or is in any way modular with midi, you can build a solution in synthedit very easily.

i don't know if this comes up enough to be useful..

how about a plug-in that displays incoming midi data and allows you to assign one incoming controller to one outgoing controller cc#...

Um, I actually had a kind developer build a plugin to filter out fretted notes. It both MAc OSX and Windows. Just set the midi velocity range to 17-127 and you are all set.
