If so, is this for themselves or everyone, I'm not quite sure exactly what it entails if anyone can elaborate on what open source exactly means in terms of a vst synth? thanks.
For yourself anyway, if for everyone it must be free as in speech as well (you have to publish your modification as well) and the creators need to be credited... Google for GPL the general public license...
Some open source projects surpassed the closed source ones. Anything related to security is more secure if open sourced for obvious reasons (backdoors cannot be hidden)...
Open source is not necessarily free as in beer. For example if you want to download a compiled version of Ardour you need to pay at least 1$, but you could download the sources and compile it yourself for 0...
Programmers need to be payed as well of course, those who benefit usually do that for also obvious reasons...

Don't know half of what you're on about there. So it's open source to make modifications to it for yourself but you can share it?

Yes, of course. You don't need to, but if you do you have to follow rules:

Read up about the history of Linux (I am not sure you ever heard about it, but that is common knowledge and should be taught in every school to the kids...)

So basically you can access the source code to modify it however you see fit, so I could add a sub-oscillator or reverb if I knew how to code one in the same programming language?

It means the source code is open to anyone. Due to the licensing, you could, for example, just grab the formant filter from Odin from here and implement it in your own free open source synth. Or you could add your own stuff to Odin and release a different version of it, as long as it's free and open source as well :D

For example, we (and by "we", I mean the other members of the Surge Synth Team) implemented some filters from Odin in Surge, which is free and open source as well (we modified them quite a bit, though, if I remember correctly).

"FREEWARE"?!

What a disgrace to free (as in freedom)/libre/GPL synth.

He should've use libre or GPL because freeware usually means free as in price but with a closed source.

What are you talking about? Odin 2 is free software. For sound banks the GPL wouldn’t fit as you should know. You get the sources anyway and can tweak it to your liking. To put a creative commons license to such a pack is probably too much hassle...

Did you sign up just for this post?

Awesome! Thank you so much, you've clearly putten a lot of effort into this, with title image and installation instructions. I am right now compiling Odin on this machine, so I can give it a listen!

One thing I noticed: You provide the download as the entire folder structure in a .rar, with instructions how to install it. Are you aware that Odin2 provides a dedicated .osb (Odin Soundbank) format, which takes care of all of this? Just go into the patch-browser and in the left-most section select "export", it will export the entire soundbank as .osb. Although to be fair: I never once saw this feature being used by anyone ever, so it is probably not very obvious :) If you use it, however, it will work on all platforms without the hassle of manual installation.

I was thinking of adding a new section to my homepage, where I could offer some additional soundbanks, just like this one. Until now I was lacking the soundbanks  From the description I take it you're cool with it? I would restrict this to proper .osb files however. And you will be credited of course.

Edit: I just took the lib for a test drive. Very nice, this one will make a fine addition to the factory soundbank! :phones: :tu:
