I was searching for free DAWs and Cakewalk seemed interesting. But then I saw article that bandlab won’t continue to develop Cakewalk anymore... But on the other hand Cakewalk is very prominently at their front page. So I am bit confused:D

At their own site:
www.cakewalk.com/announcement
“ After 30 years of Cakewalk's long and illustrious history, I am saddened to announce that we ceased new product development and reduced overall operations this past Friday.”

That just seemed a bit...worrying when planning to invest time & energy to learn a new DAW

That is from when Gibson shut down Cakewalk Sonar.
There is even a link in there to look at gibsons site for more info.

Yeah, Cakewalk piano instruments can be really good. I don't know how to feel about them going the free route. One one hand, exciting; and on the other: What about the money I spent on their software, and why can't I now buy Rapture Pro presets and add-ons.

Really frustrating, and rapture pro can glitch.
I don't make audio products anymore. I sell furniture & smart products.

That's old information. They just put out a new early access release that adds an Arranger function to the program with other items. It's going full steam ahead.
What sound do dreams make when they die?

I got a pop-up at that location that tells you all about the new version. Still alive and well.

Was it too expensive to continue developing their instruments like rapture?

That is not their site anymore. This has been, since two years:

So far they have been doing ok. There's been a stable stream of new releases. This has lead me to even try it out after a very very long break from Cakewalk.

It's interesting how they will continue long term. They do have to get money from somewhere. Don't think depending on someone's rich dad for long term business plan is sustainable. Maybe the Bandlab service funds also Cakewalk development, no idea. Do people even use it? Also, I can't imagine that the there's much natural overlap between the crowds that use Bandlab and Cakewalk. One would suppose that majority of people who care about such service in the first place are more Fruityloops users.

I always wondered about that as well. It might have been healthier in the long run to keep Cakewalk/Sonar payware, even when it's tied to Bandlab, which I never heard of before, or since they acquired Cakewalk.

This do seem like disinformation - not a whisper on their forum over something like that.

Whatever they choose to do in the future - I won't mind paying up like for Sonar Platinum new and then annual something. Killer daw, and glad I found my way back.
