Using a Mackie HUI as a MIDI control surface only, and not for raw audio...

Does the Mackie HUI's meter bridge just reflect the MIDI-attached DAW's VU meters (for digital audio in the DAW), or only the levels of any audio that happens to be through the HUI itself? (The manual does not make it clear.) :-|
