Ambient CD Advice

I will be working on an Ambient project. However, I'm not well-versed in the genre's artists, etc. Upon reading the "classic IDM albums" thread, I listened to some clips from FSOL's Lifeforms album and this is the style I'm interested in -- sparse drums/perc, etc.
However, this album is 10 years old. Is it still "relevant" or is there a more modern version of this style that I should consider listening to? Is anyone considered the cutting edge of ambient?
Thanks!

There are several sub-genres of Ambient music. You have a liking for Ambient Techno. There's also Ambient New Age which is bit more classy in my opinion. i.e. Patrick O'Hearn or David Helping. FSOL was and in some ways remain ahead of their time. People are still using classic drum kits and loops, so I wouldn't rule their sound out. Let me throw a few at 'cha that I like in that genre...Autechre, Higher Intelligence Agency, The Orb, Orbital, Eat Static, Anubian Lights, Aphex Twin...there's a few anyway.

Funny you mentioned Beautiful World Torhan, I just picked that up 2 days ago. My fave by him has to be 'Trust' still. That's an Ambient New Age classic.
