Amusing outboard effects discovery..

Ok, so I sold my guitar and bass to focus on keyboards and vocals. I didn't sell my rackmount Behringer V-Amps (one bass, one guitar) and for shits and giggles I wired 'em up to my Delta 44, so I could use them as "insert effects" in Tracktion through sneaky use of inputs and outputs.

Well, damned if my lame-o guitar and bass samples don't sound better through the cheap Behringers than anything else I've tried in software! And feeding z3ta through a mega-distortion preset on the guitar V-Amp makes a truly nasty evil sound, heh heh.

I've heard that software isn't all that good at some things, and while I didn't believe it before I'm going to get opinionated and say that, for a decent distortion or cabinet sim, outboard is in my experience better than anything else I've tried (Amplitube didn't rock my boat, Slayer effect unit didn't either). Maybe I'm just weird.

Well, I *am* weird, but is it just me?

I've got to agree. For guitar effects especially distortion it's hardware all the way for me. I've got a Johnson J Station and it just blows away any software distorion including Amplicrude.

I have a BOSS GL-100 that makes distortion un-touchable by anything I've seen in VST.
