For dedicated analog sound, take a look on the following: Synapse The Legend (best Model D emu); u-he RePro (best Prophet 5/Pro One emu) and DIVA (best overall analog synth emu); Tal U-NO-LX (best Juno 60 emu); the upcoming Synapse's little synth (best Oberheim OB-Xa emu). Among others. I specially like one that it's not popular enough, but sounds amazing: Beepstreet Dagger.
Those are some of the greatest. But pretty much any of the modern synths can create analog sounding patches easily.

I have a Dsi Rev2 Prophet, a bit different then prophet 5, but uhe nailed the prophet sound completely. In some cases, I choose theirs over dsi.
Also the synapse legend is as close to the model d you'll get.
The Roland emus are just as good as you'll get to these real Synths as well. We really are blessed to have the options we now have ITB.

Vangelis never used a Mini, or if he did, he used it very sparsely. JMJ used it, but not prominently.kvotchin wrote: Tue Apr 28, 2020 11:08 pm The Legend, definitely one of the best. But honestly, a lot of VA synths will get you there, if the presets are good enough, or your patch creation chops are.
To sound like Vangelis, you will need a good CS80 emulation (none of the mentioned synths will get you that). And some of the old Roland mono synths (a Roland Cloud subscription will give you that). And a Grand Piano sound (Pianoteq 6 will get you there). And lots of drums/percussion.
To get the JMJ sound (from the beginning) you will need an Eminent emulation (none of the mentioned synths will give you that). A Solina emulation can get you close. Besides that, an emulation of the VCS3 and/or Synthi A (together with the Eminent, it makes the most part of JMJ sound), and an emulation of the ARP 2600. Ideally you would also need emulations of the ARP 2500 and the Moog Modular too. AND the Synthex, of course.
This is if you want to sound like Vangelis and JMJ.
I would say... get Arturia V Collection and a subscription of Roland Cloud, and you're done.
Xils can get you covered on the Synthex and the VCS3, as well as the string ensembles (although not the Eminent/Solina). But Vangelis also used the Roland strings/vocoder.

Oh, sort of missed the bit about Vangelis and JMJ. Okay, yeah. Probably what’s in the post above then.
In general though, it’s still a decent stand-in for an actual analog synth. Many people probably won’t even know the difference.

No, it is not. If you want to sound like JMJ or Vangelis, yo need to be as good as they are. Those guys are much greater than the tools they use and if you gave Vangelis The Legend, he would make it sound like Vangelis. Suggesting that those artists only sound the way they do because of the tools they used is a massive insult to them and misses the point entirely.fmr wrote: Tue Apr 28, 2020 11:23 pmTo sound like Vangelis, you will need a good CS80 emulation (none of the mentioned synths will get you that). All you really need is a good quality V/A synth with all the features Vangelis and JMJ would want to use and you'll be able to do a passable impression of them. If I had to pick just one thing to do that, I think I'd probably buy Korg's Odyssey plugin. It's the one I usually reach for when I want a good V/A sound. Either that or wait for Synapse to release their new plugin, which also has a great analogue style sound. A third option, that won't cost you as much, is to track down Novation's V-Station, which is a virtual copy of their K-Station V/A hardware synth. It's a very versatile synth that can cover a lot of bases.

Yeah, that too, of course, but I presume that's implied, no? If what takes to be Vangelis or JMJ would be "just" the tools, it would be too damn easy. That said, I disagree that ANY synth would do the job.BONES wrote: Wed Apr 29, 2020 1:00 amNo, it is not. If you want to sound like JMJ or Vangelis, yo need to be as good as they are. If that was the case, Vangelis wouldn't have bought himself SEVERAL CS80s, just to be sure he would never be out of parts. And any piano would do the job - why spend A LOT in a Steinway Concert D, or a Bosendorfer Imperial?
Try to mimic a Synthi A with a V-Station

I'm going to stir the Pot a Bit.
Massive X.
Diva is my favorite VA if we are strictly staying by those rules, but MX with the Blue Monark filter is Honestly almost identical to a Virtual Analogue VST...

Don’t mistake Dave’s inability to think up new synth names with the Prophet 08 being anything like the Prophet 5. The Prophet 6 is much more similar to the sound of the Prophet 5, which is what RePro was based on. I’ve got a 6 and a REV2. I love them both for different reasons, but they’re very different sounding synths. RePro can sound like the 6, but nothing sounds like a REV2.trusampler wrote: Tue Apr 28, 2020 10:05 pm I have a Dsi Rev2 Prophet, a bit different then prophet 5, but uhe nailed the prophet sound completely. My personal Top 5 are:
1. P900
2. Repro
3. Moog Model D app (iOS only), otherwise The Legend but the Moog app has a much better saturation and more interesting FX for my taste on board
4. Dagger (mono)
5. Zeeon (iOS)

For that classic sound consider also IK Syntronik and Arturia’s synth bundle. They actually have a sale on at the moment, so worthwhile checking it out.

What I like about it is that I don't need to fire up Monark if I want to do some nice analog stuff.Spencer Maddox wrote: Wed Apr 29, 2020 1:50 am I'm going to stir the Pot a Bit.

Although I wished CPU usage was a bit lower.
