Self answering, innit? They’re cassettes.

Only reason to use them in the first place was there wasn’t something better for what we used them to do.

When minidisc came out, I jumped on. It’s too bad Sony was so stupid as to market them against CD instead of against cassette (and charge so much for royalties on the format).

[now remembering old tapes that turned into screeching noisemakers after a few years of frequent playing...]

I always tend to put cassettes on the right.

Saying that, I still use them.

I sometimes bounce samples into my old four-track and back again to give them a bit of the wobble treatment.

Usually because they were melted on the dashboard. Can't think of another reason I left one behind.

I had my first cd player (a cheap compact boombox) when I was 9 in 1995 and I bought (well... my parents bought me!) music on CDs since them. I used cassettes untill the end of 2004 with a cheap walkman when going to school, then I bought a cheap portable cd player (which could read also CDs with mp3) and I completely stopped using cassettes.
I don't miss the cassettes at all! It took so much time to compile them, the quality wasn't that good in comparison to CDs, you couldn't skip to another song (you had to use rewind/fast forward and wait)...

I don't mind vinyl records as a format, I bought some over the years, but I prefer CDs and digital downloads (in a lossless format) when avaible (cheaper, more practical, no medium degradation with repeated listening, higher quality - unless the recording is slammed for loudness, of course!).
Actually, I try to stay away from physical formats nowadays... I miss the feeling of having a record in my hands (having something to look at, spending time reading the sleeves...), I miss the pleasure and excitement of looking through the crates in record stores... but that's it, I suppose digital downloads are more sustainable than collecting tons of plastic pieces.

Of all the formats, cassettes is my least favourite. I can understand them for creative purposes while making music, but I wouldn't even consider them as a medium for listening.

Because apart from being able to make copies and mixtapes (which both rock) they were total shit.

Left 'coz they're pretty cr4p... useful in their day when that was all we had in a small handy user format.

All my old 1970's recording just shed oxide on the tape heads now ....

Technology moved on and I had no choice but now I am glad about it. I love my CDs. Probably soon have to move on from there too. World don't stay the same for long. We must become like a reed in the wind and bend gracefully with the elements so that we don't break. We must be like the clouds in the sky......

Good for effect ,crap for quality. 2" Reel to reel that's another league still in use today for its saturation and headroom.

I never minded the audio fidelity of cassettes, but after having used CDs for some time, rewinding a 90 minute cassette suddenly became quite the chore.
Also finding a specific song wasn't all that great in hindsight

Oh, and all those spaghettied tapes...

But i also left CDs long ago...

I haven't, they seem to agregate the best of each format,
Smaller than vinyl, more portable than cds, sweet mechanical feeling of music - not eletronic garbage like mp3 - Nice colorful cover, collectionable, and easy to buy cheap on street stores, without having to pass through much bad music till find one nice like nowadays on streaming, but with a seller to tell right the one you should get. And the catalogue included things you would never find on cd or online... A shame i don't see much of these street shops with cassettes any more.

Why did you left cassettes?
