Hi there,
I've recently bought myself a midi cable and downloaded waveform 11 fro my pc, in order to record my electronic drum kit.
Now, there is a red light on the midi cable, and there is no sound being registered on the track I have selected.
I'm hoping this is an easy fix that I haven't spotted.
Thank you for reading x

Sorry if this is too obvious, but do you have an instrument on the track? MIDI is just note data and doesn't make a sound on its own.

Nothing is too obvious with this scenario.
I am completely new to this.
I have my edrums plugged in via a midi cable to the pc.
I have selected midi for the track.
The green bar, which I am assuming is a sound bar, stays dormant.

put a drum sim plugin (instrument) on the midi track... there are a few free ones around. then when you hit your edrum... it sends midi data down the cable to the tracks midi input which the drum sim recognizes and plays an audio sample... out comes sound

Slate makes a decent free version of drum simulator https://stevenslatedrums.com/ssd5/

as stated the edrum does not make sound... it only sends out midi data via the cable. the drum simulator is the sound source

Okay. I'm assuming your edrum module has a headphone jack or similar and what you hear there is what you're trying to get into Waveform. That's not what MIDI does. To get the audio your drum kit is generating into Waveform, you'd need to plug it into an audio interface with the same type of input connection which is connected to your computer. You'd then be able to route the interface input into Waveform and record the audio.

MIDI on the other hand is note data. Each drum has one or more notes that it emits when played. So if you play the kick, the edrum module will communicate to the computer via the MIDI cable and tell it that you've played, say, C1 along with how hard the note/drum has been played. Waveform can convey this information to a VST drum instrument, which then will play a sound. Two good free VST drum kits are MTPowerDrumKit and the free Steven Slate drum kit. An issue you might run into is that the note your kit thinks is a kick/other kit piece might not be the note the plugin thinks is that kit piece. I think both plugins let you remap notes. Your kit module may also allow you to alter its mapping.

To use a plugin, run the installer. The plugin should install somewhere that Waveform recognizes automatically. (If you're trying the MT power drumkit, it doesn't have an installer. There are instructions for Mac on the site. For Windows place the items in the Zip file into C:/ProgramFiles/Steinberg/VstPlugins). Then in Waveform go to settings -> plugins -> scanning and sorting -> scan for new or updated VST plugins. It should find the drum plugin. Next, drag the New Plugin Generator tile in the upper right corner onto your MIDI track and select the plugin you installed from the menu. The track should be armed to record (if not click it) and you should be able to play the plugin from your kit. You will see the name of your MIDI device in the input section to the left of the track and will get a green bar below it every time you play a note.

Things to try if you don't get a sound
If no green bar/input: Go to Settings -> MIDI Devices and make sure your kit is there and is set as the default device. It may show up as a generic device name since it's connected via a cable.

If input is detected: the notes may not match up as mentioned above. The plugin should tell you somewhere what notes correspond to which kit piece. Your edrum module probably also tells you this somewhere. One will need to be changed to match the other.

Did you try to google that? Usually, it’s my first step if i face some difficulties. I’m pretty sure you are not the first to have such trouble. Also check YouTube. Some geeks have channels and they tell how to fix basically anything. I’m not trying to offend you, just some recommendations for you for the future.

Thanks for the replies people.
I've did try google and the first suggestions were try a shorter cable, or use an audio lead, which I don't have currently.
Now about to try again so here's hoping!

So, i gave in on midi, think it may have just been a dodgy cable as nothing seemed to work or change the no sound situation. I got a jack adaptor and am using audio. Works fine now.
Thank for all of your replies people.
Really appreciated
Big love
