I am NOT planning to intall the latest windows updates to my DAW, but thought I might to my wife's laptop.
Has anyone done this yet, is it worth it?

I've done it on two of my PCs (XP home) without issue. I plan to do my laptop (XP pro) tomorrow. I had heard a rumor of possible network problems, but so far so good. I immediately noticed that the Windows firewall goes up and apps that routinely ping things on the internet will get flagged before they make their requests. You get to choose whether they are allowed or not on a case-by-case basis.
I don't have any low-level drivers or special A/V configurations/peripherals so I may not be the best advisor. Neither FL Pro nor any of my VSTs seem worse for the wear, but it probably won't hurt to wait a little while longer to see if anyone else notices big problems. Good Luck.

service pack 2? its annoying as anything... when you go to download a program it blocks the download and then you have to go tell it that you did want to download it so it asks you if you want to save or run, when you try to run it, it asks you whether you want to run it or not... i hate microsoft...

I'm not Microsoft's biggest fan but I don't have any problems with downloads or installs... SP2 on WInXP Pro. I've had no trouble with it whatsoever, so far.
I did need to update the drivers for tyhe video card (nVidia) as OpenGL died. MusicMatch JukeBox is dying, but I never tried it on this machine pre SP2 so I dunno if that is my hardware firewalll, MM not liking NAT/ lack of UPNP, pr jut MM been generally crap.
Overall the machine feels a little snappier. Open/close times for apps seems to be a touch faster, and I get the feeling the memory usage has been tweaked.
I'm not using the built in AV cos I have McAffee, I am using the built in firewall (in addition to a hardware one).
For a machine that is not net facing, or is at least hiding behind a heavy duty firewall, I'd say wait for software/hardware vendors to find all the SP2 issues they need to fix in their products. For any machine that is open to the net, you really should consider going SP2 at the earliest realistic opportunity.

I upgraded this week - WinXP Pro SP2
Everything has been smooth so far. As far as the extra security goes I just disabled it. SP2 adds a service to your system that runs by default. It allows the new "Windows Security Center" to tell you if you have anti-virus and the firewall turned on (stuff you should know anyway). The service is called "Security Center" and you can disable it by running services.msc. Just another waste of resources imo.
As far as the new secuity stuff in IE, just use FireFox. Its far more secure than IE could ever be.
