One of the biggest challenges for beginning recording engineers is correctly hearing dynamics.
This relates to the use of compressors and limiters.
Dynamics are extremely important in how the recording will sound outside the studio when played on a plethora of other systems.
Learning to hear dynamics IMHO is the number one challenge for the recording engineer.
