I'm a bit of a newcomer to computer-based music but i have a problem. I'm using a laptop (Mobile Athlon 4 1.20ghz with 240mb ram) which is a couple of years old, and i'm running Cubase SX 1.06 and a handful of VSTi's.

Heres the problem. I open SX, I create a MIDI track and open up say the Albino synth. I've got a controller keyboard connected through a Tascam US122 USB interface (set at 1024 latency). So if i play Albino through the keyboard i can play maybe 10 seconds or so fine then the sound starts to cut out every few seconds. So basically, i cant do anything.

Any ideas on what the problem is? I'm guessing it may be RAM but i dont know. The SX performance indicator doesnt seem to show anything, the CPU meter is never over 10% and the lower graph doesnt light up at all.

Another point, is my processor good enough for music creation?

Hope someone can help!
thanks.

Q: Have you got a firewall och anti-virus software running on the machine? If so, have you tried to deactivate them to see if that would increase performace?

dont have a firewall. i had 'stopped' my AV, but now i've unloaded it completely. Makes a slight improvement. But if i record one track then try and record another the same problem appears :? maybe i just need a new computer

First try to increase the ram.

what graphics *card*? onboard?

if too much problems, try to catch a girlfriend with better laptop than yours :P

are you using any messengers? like MSN messenger?

I have had similar problem but after turning off all my internet
related program everything worked fine.

try to turn off all other programs (I mean quit all of them completely)
when you are using cubase.

Cubase is very sensitive to other program(I think) so
whenever there is something else running behind cubase
and that program start to do something
like messenger for example trying to connect to internet or
getting message from friend, you will get drop outs.

Wha'ts your VST CPU memter look like during these episodes? If it's peaking, there's your problem. Albino has some pretty CPU intensive patches. Not all of them, I've written a song with 11 instances of Albino, but you do have to watch it.

Theres no Messenger running, in fact nothing else is running, and ive followed all the xp optimization tips i've seen.

The CPU meter is between 10%-20% when i notice problems.

Graphics card is an S3 Savage 4 , agp 4x interface, whatever that means.

I just noticed something else. I only used the US-122 for Cubase but i set it up as my Default windows soundcard and i noticed that even if i just load an MP3 in wondows media player the sound cuts out every few seconds.

thanks for all the help

EDIT: Well, actually, i just this second ordered a new laptop...

Dell Inspiron 8600
Intel Centrino 1.6ghz
512mb ddr sdram
GeForce FX Go5200 graphics
60gb hard drive

if someone tells me this isnt any good i think i'll kill myself hehe
