Shareware tools for sample keymapping/instrument building?

Hey there peeps,

I'm looking for a shareware program (that isn't Vienna, Awave, Alive) that will allow me to create multi-sampled instruments. I'd like to be able to build instruments "offline" in some sort of universal format such as Akai S5000, etc. Would a kind soul be able to point me in the right direction?
