Is there a method for drawing straight lines?

Not quite, except through scripting, or unless you want to make either vertical or horizontal lines.

thanks - any angle would be great, but even horizontal would be ok - how is that done?

You can draw a dot (on its own layer) then do horizontal averaging. Another technique is to draw a non-straight line, then edit the history pha file to remove every point but the first and last.
