A mate of mine going to Canada and getting studio gear for us. This is what we need and have zerod in on :

Multi I/O sound interface.

The E-mu 1820 . Cannot decide between the 1820 and the 1820m as i have no idea bout either's sound. Are the Converters on the 1820m worth the extra 100 ? And how do the converters on the 1820 sum up ??

Portable sound card

This is for my friend who is going to canada. He is into mostly making music. What is needed is low latency for live playing and VSTi's . At least a stereo IO. 4 IO would be nice. Mic Pre/Hi-Z would be an added bonus.

We initially thought of piking up the Cubase System 4. But ive read that the box is broke.

Our current choice is the Tascam US122. (i personally do not like the tascam boards, work on a DM24 daily. Worst gain structure). What kind of latencies can i expect out here ? and does it work well ?

He is right now on a Desktop but soon to get a laptop. We were looking at firewire options, but a laptop with built in firewire is beyond reach. So USB is next. I was hoping to see more USB 2.0 products in the market. Is USB 1 worth it ?

Ultra cheap monitors

Again for my friend (I have the Event TR6's :D ) He needs something that sounds good, loud enough, and gives enough accuracy for him to be able to choose samples and patches.

We have shortlisted the M-audio DX4's

Microphones

I cannot decide. i want a mic that is versatile. If it could handle Guitars, Vocals and overheads well. I was thinking the Studio Projects C1. (maybe in stereo). But then for stereo (overheads and all) are not small diaphram mics better ? I also record a lot of solo indian classical instruments. And done some very decent recordings using a pair of AKG451's (not matched)

I can also record stereo using two different mics i suppose. But might not want two different artifacts on the sund source.

My options

Single good mic (the Studio Projects C1)
Stereo mic pair (C1 or small diaphram ?)
One solid tube for the price of two ?
Mix and match. what ?

Perhaps a C1 and a stereo pair (if i can afford it)

My mate reaches Canada on the 11th. Leaves on the 13th. Will be in Toronto. I was asked to shop at JRR

Uncle E has been the BEST. Extremely helpful. Very good prices. I'd shop there again. I need to place the order by tommorow or latest by dayafter. Whatever Eric saz...

waiting.
