Hardware gizmo that does old tape stuff - like pitching and slow down.

Hey peeps,

I'm looking for a hardware gizmo that reproduces a tapes pitching and slow down sound. Also something that might impart that nice analog tape character (and that's easy to use!).

I was thinking about picking up new walkman type of thing, but I'd really like something that can play at half-speed, etc. And something that I can tweak on the fly for those way out delay sound effects. :)

Any ideas? Thanks!

Walkman is a bad idea: no control over speed
We are the KVR collective. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. Image

indeed.
if you wanted to go that route, id at least seek out an old seperates hifi tape deck with nicer preamps than a walkman, but still no varispeed control.
unlike an old 4 track tape recorder?

but for adding analogue flavours, use analogue gear
or as were in the samples forum, samples thereof,in any sampler will give you varispeed and such.

A 1/4in reel-to-reel tape deck - some of the better consumer units had speed control and pretty much all of them would do a tape stoooopppppppppppppp.

A friend bought one a month or two ago, mainly to play prerecorded tapes he picked up at auction for...reasons. So they're around and not all that expensive but you'll probably have to hunt around auctions a bit.

The tape's a bit easier to get hold of than it was a few years back, I believe.

Indeed! But I'm really looking for a piece of gear that can do vari-speed (beyond software).I had thought of a guitar pedal of some kind. Maybe a looper? But I don't know much about them as I don't really use guitar stuff.

Thanks.

Something like that would be perfect. Basically the way the BBC would do those old sci-fi sounds. I've not really heard anything in the vst realm that matches that effect and can impart that nice analog flavor. :)

Thanks!

Cheers! That's the drawback. I was thinking or hoping I should say, that someone had done some kind of replica unit for today's music/fx market. A pipe dream I guess... :D

cant think of any loopers that do varispeed off the top of my head.
tc electronic seems to be most peoples loop pedal of choice, so id look at that maybe, but it will be digital, all guitar loopers are.

the reel to reel is a nice idea.

Thanks! I'll have a quick look into TC electronics - just in case. But it seems like reel to reel might be the way to go. :tu:
