...check that you didnt yank the entire audio card out of the PCI slot when you tripped over some cables in the dark the night before...!

Next time your DAW crashes with a kernel error on startup, or cant find your audio card when you finally get it into Safe Mode...
...check that you didnt yank the entire audio card out of the PCI slot when you tripped over some cables in the dark the night before...!

I didnt, though. I was methodical, uninstalled the device, reinstalled the drivers, did a full disk check, yada yada yada.
Only then did I start to disconnect the cables in order to pull the audio card and reseat it... to find that it wasn't in its little slot at the back, it was lying on the bottom of the case....
...and then I remembered tripping over the damn cables when I got home the previous night...

I remember wasting an afternoon reinstalling Cubase3, Soundcard, midi drivers, and damn nearly the whole OS, before recalling that I'd unplugged MIDI leads a few days prior to get the vacuum cleaner into a tight spot, and that I didn't check when plugging them back in that I had them wired up in to out.
I learnt many things that afternoon. Chiefly, I learnt that it's easier not to vacuum.

when i got up to answer the phone yesterday, the upper flap of my house slipper caught the headphone cord. with these long cords, you don't notice these thing till you're about 6 feet from the computer.
then there's all this noise and whatnot.
lots of things got pulled off and gravity being what it is, down
i learned my lesson -- no more warm slippers -- bare or socked feet only

oh and a few weeks ago we were babysitting the wife's nephew's 4 year old and once he was returned home I went to my system to get some playing for the weekend.
took about 2 hours to figure out the little guy had pushed a single button on my 2x2 midi box (midi thru) so my keyboard wasn't getting across.
usually he snatches my trackball and hides it in odd places, so I've been hiding that first.
