what are some good sample cd's for hip hop?

I am looking for the usual basses, electric pianos, lo-fi, kicks, snares, hats... etc

are there some real obvious choices for hip-hop samples?

thanks

Sorry if you've heard this a thousand times, but...

I thought hiphop is about sampling in the "old sense", that's to say sampling from vinyl.

So the best record for sampling from? Roy Ayers' Ubiquity, perhaps :)

i agree about sampling from old records.... however, sometimes i can use a nice soundbank with some strings, minimoog basses, electric pianos, etc..

i cannot afford to do sample clearance, so i must rely on sample cds and things

Trilogy from Spectrasonics is great for the drum side of Hip Hop, or so I am told.

there are some nice dirty-sounding vinyl-sampled drumloop sample-cd's. whatch out for them, they're really usefull.

spectrasonics trilogy is a bass-sample-player...and the best-sounding bass-vsti i know...it is great for hiphop. they've got some nice hiphop-synth-bass-patches and the ebass-sounds are really usefull.

for some analogue shit pro-53 is recommandable. it has a real dirty, lively sound.

Yeh, I have Vinylistics which is jam packed with all the old classic breaks. And ofcourse, all cleared for use (i think! :-o ).

Are there also breaks that can be used for drum'n'bass? Or, could you say some example breaks so i know about the overall style...

Ueberschall's Black Beats from da block looks like the best one out there, i got a crappy one from steinberg, but i guess u get what u pay for, which was 9.99 :o

The classic breaks can be used for anything really, its not like one is hip hop another is d&b. If you have a break at around 80bpm, then pitch it up and octave and you have that typcial jungle sound. It doesnt have THAT much on there, but it is a good resource for classic vinyl beats.

There aren't a great many good Hip Hop & RnB sample CD's out there. Most of the ones that market themselves as Hip Hop, sound nothing like the current sound. They are filled with old skool loops, that aren't really popular in the genre anymore.

I'm considering getting the Ueberschall Black Beats From Da Block myself, as it's relatively new and the demo sounds reasonably current. The Big Fish Audio Ghetto Grooves II CD sounds ok too. It really is a matter of scouring through everything that is available.

By far the best samples I've encountered are at www.modernbeats.com check it out.

that Black Beats CD sounds really nice, when it says "song arrangements (construction kits)" does that mean it has the individual sounds and not just the loops??

Post

i wouldn't buy all this construction-sample-cds, that's bullshit. do you wanna make your own music or use loops from somebody else the whole time, that's pretty weak. if you want some loops start diggin old stuff, old rare movies, old soundtracks, something new but not pre-made sample-loops on sample-cds. you can't call yourself producers usin that shit, producers are the people who have produced the sample-loops on this cds. for great drums try www.modernbeats.com, for instruments i would use some great sample-libraries/players(trilogy for basses, elektrik piano for rhodes/clavs/wurlitzer, some great synths like z3ta+/albino whateva, sampletank with the sonic reality capsules or the sonic reality refills for example). get some decent sounds to work with and start doin your own music.

Nothing beats finding that one shot drum sample on a 1960's record but if your worried about getting sued or something here are some of my favourite cd's

Doru MALAIA - SUPERDRUMS8000
E-lab - Abstract Hiphop
Emagic - Xtreme Hiphop
Kenfen.com - Zip-O-Drumz
Modernbeats.com - Klub Klapz
Wizoo - Acoustic Drums
Wizoo - Electronic Drums
all soundsforsamplers.com kits
all banginbeats.com kits

on top of that I have alot of sample cd's with drum breaks on them that I cut up. cd's like

Big Fish Audio - Kitch Elements
Soundscan - 70's Breakbeats
Spectrasonics - Metamorphis

and any drum sample you get your hands in will come in handy someday when it comes to hiphop lol.
