i'm looking for some advice here. basically i'm going out of town to "jam" with a couple of guys i've known for years. we've rented a rehersal space and are going to have 1 drummer, 1 bassist/vocalist, 2 guitar players. any suggestions on a quick and easy way to record us playing?? renting equipment is definitely our option here.
best thing would be able to record individual tracks so i could mess with them later, but realistically i'm guessing its going to be a recording as a whole. no mixer board will be available - just guitar amps, PA system (for vocals only), and drums. any suggestions would be great. thanks.

Stick a PZM mic;

on on a wall somewhere where you'll get a good balance of all the instruments. Used to record gigs this way, always got quite good results, with a bit of trial and error over placement.

I would have thought you could rent a standalone HD recorder fairly cheap. Most of them have 8 tracks, and many of them will record up to 8 inputs at once. And they all have stacks of FX onboard, so you can route in a few gates to clean up the recordings. You'd have to check out the HD space though, as some of them only have 10-15minutes-worth. Some of the Roland jobbies have decent sized HDs now though, and i think they can be routed through to another HD (although can't be sure of that)
EDIT...could be a problem if you've no mixer though. Certainly the Roland standalones have at least one Hi-z input for direct guitar recording, but not several. Although the better ones have several mic pres (I think)...so you could just stick mics in front of your cabinets? Or even hire a small mixer as well - even something cheapo, like a diddy Behringer will have enough mic pres, or a Mackie 12channel jobby. That would only cost a few bucks on top of an HD standalone recorder. Probably worth the little extra so that you can edit individual channels later. Shouldn't cost much for what is basically cheap equipment?

thanks kritikon. i'll have to see what's available to rent where we're going.
anyone have any thoughts or comments on DAT or minidisc recorders? i don't have any experience with them, but have heard they do pretty good "field" recordings?

PZM mics?... ooh they look interesting.. I bet they're good for recording atmospheres too? How would you work them with stereo though?
