Hi!

I was watching Pet Shop Boys on an old Top of the Pops last night performing Heart. Forgotten how good their songs were.

Anyway, decided to try to remake it today. Looking for the bass sound. On Top of the Pops they only used 2 synths / samplers - the Fairlight CMI and the Emu Emulator II. Neil Tennant did say the drums were a Syn Drum but on a 7" version so don't know if they were the same drums on the official track. I'm inclined to think they're from the Fairlight. Think Linn Drum sounds were on it.

As for the bass, downloaded the demo of Arturia CMI V (Fairlight) and I already have UVI Emulator II. None of the bass patches on the Arturia sounded right although a couple did sound close. There were only 30 patches. I understand the Fairlight had over a 1000 patches (unless I'm mistaken) so I would've thought the actual hardware had triple that amount of bass sounds. None of the bass sounds on UVI's Emulator II sounded right either although there aren't many patches on that either. If anyone knows where the bass sounds comes from that'd be appreciated.



It's Orchestra Hit 2 from the Fairlight used in it too. I think it's 2. There's a few but that sounded spot on from a vid. Come to think of it, is Chris playing the bass line on the Emulator II and the bass line is arpeggiated isn't it?

ignore what they used on TOTPs (at least mostly)

TOTPs used to hire gear from a local shop for artists, so there is no guarantee that's what they used....

Good advice there. The Orb’s TOTP performance of “Blue Room” using a chess set comes to mind.
It's the music that makes the science worthwhile.

Yeah but that's deliberately taking the pee isn't it like when Morrisey sang into a bunch of flowers or Liam and Noel Gallagher swapped roles but I'm fairly confident these 2 synths were the ones used on the track myself.
