Am I getting too old? I mean, the first years when I started doing music with windows-sequencers, it was the Cakewalk days for me. I always used Cakewalk. Even the drum-programing was done using the Audio-Tracks, and inserting the instruments there. You can check an example here: http://wusik.com/song.php?id=67 (or stream it here: http://www.wusik.com/song.php?id=67&stream=y)

And synths and samples I was doing using external-modules, Reaktor standalone, SoundFonts.

Off-course, now I want to use VSTs as is far more simple to handle. But I didn't like Sonar, and CubaseSX (even the version 2) is just not confortable to me.

I was thinking on getting my old Cakewalk 8.0 that came with a Sound-Card, and just use some Chainer or EXT to load the VSTs and trigger via Midi-Loopback devices.

Actually, I miss my old Roland MC50 Sequencer... :P

Hummmm, now I wonder. Am I getting too old?

Best Regards, WilliamK

 Thanks bud, edited my text... I was wondering, I got some electronic stuff here and an USB kit that allows me to plug an LCD (got one too), 32 keys and 32 leds. Maybe I could do a Sequencer-Box, that is only a remote to a PC program? Does this exists already? :P

Or I will just go and get my old MC50 back, and get a "chainer" application.

Tracktion is also nice, I will do more tests with it. (maybe I could get a NFR copy?)

Come on William! You aren't even close. You are just experiencing what is known as Future Shock. To be expected in such a fast paced world. Just pick up an acoustic instrument - you do play guitar or a wind instrument I hope - find as natural a setting that you can get to and chill out for a few hours playing acoustically. It will do wonders.

Best,
Gordon

I still enjoy CWPA 9.0 that was a no-nonsense multitracker.

My heavens, someone else that used Voyetra software! I learned some of my digital skillz (or lack thereof) on Digital Orchestrator Pro! :o :o

Talk about a flash from the past.. but I'm old (45) so I guess it's OK. And I use Tracktion - no bollocks, just gets the job done. :D

 Ohhh yeah, loved that thing. MS-DOS doesn't seem so bad right now... :P

I remember it came with my old SB MIDI UART KIT. It was a 8 bit SB, but I only used the MIDI part anyway. That time I was using a Korg X5 keyboard, and one of those Alesis Drum-Machines. No mixer, I just short-circuited the signals, was terrible. When one was playing, the other would get softer. After some time a friend borrowed a poor noisy mixer... Life was good...

Ahhhh, don't remember me, the old TAPE-TO-TAPE mixing!!!!

I had two TAPE devices. No sequencer yet, just a Yamaha PSR keyboard and some pedal-effects from a guitar-player cousin.

I played one part of the music and recorded into a TAPE. Now I play that TAPE and on the TAPE-DECK-2 I record the previous recording and would play something on top.

Hehehe, the result was a lot of noise, but I could record several tracks...

With time I got a 4 track recorder. And latter, my first MIDI device...

Are you getting old?

Well, yeah. As Telex so aptly put it, "We are all getting old." (bwee bwee bwee bweeeee) *dance dance*

Are you getting too old?

Hah! :-D You're productive, you're doing things that to me at least look interesting, you're a mere spring chicken compared to me [back when I was a kid we used to hollow our own drums out of volcanic cinders -- by gnawing! ;->], and last I checked you're GOOD.

I started with Cakewalk 6 and soundfonts... Actually when you look at Sonar 3 its amazing how similar alot of program is to CWPA 6. The piano roll (I used it exclusively since I had no keyboard) is virtually the same!

... of course, if you hanker for the retro days, you could do worse than a Commodore 64 with a Moog Song Producer attached. ($20-$35 on eBay, etc.)

mostly joking... but I do own a Song Producer :-)
