I've got Stutter Edit 1, and there's an upgrade option for SE2 for $29 today.

I'm also looking at Glitch2 and Effectrix etc.
I've got Gross Beat, and thats a bit fiddly to make it work in the way I want it to, plus the audio has to get into its buffer before it can act. Does SE2 have this kind buffer delay too?

Anyone got an opinion on SE2 vs its competitors, and why ?

Glitch 2 is much more straightforward to use than either of the Stutter Edits. But I find Se2 a bit more interesting and powerful than Glitch 2. Both allow effects to fire off before a buffer is filled.

I own SE2, Glitch 2 and Mrythmizer (Gross Beat 'clone') and find all 3 are different enough to own.

Yeah. Agree with zoidkirb. I've got a few buffer type effects. Glitch2, Stutter Edit 1 and 2, Permut8, Gross Beat, Vengeance Glitch Bitch.

I find Glitch 2 and Permut8 (with midi routed to it) are the easiest and most approachable. Stutter Edit's GUI is kinda messy IMO, and it takes a bit of getting used to, but it's deeper than the others.

Glitch 2 is simplicity in operation, others less so.

Horses for courses depending on how complex you want to go.

I have Effectrix out of the two mentioned competitors and almost never use it; it doesn't fit my workflow that much.

What i really love about SE2 is the impressive audio quality and the new modules (compared to version 1)

Usually i use it in combination with Melda's fantastic utility tool MRecorder.
So, while jamming around i record the output and then select some interesting parts.

Stutter Edit is very difficult to set up right and requires MIDI (live or from sequencer) to work, but sounds the best - most weird - so I mostly use presets and come up with interesting patterns just drawing notes randomly until something stands out
Effectrix & Glitch2 are very similar, althugh I feel te former is slightly deeper; they both can either work all the time (sort of like a transport-synced LFO) or be triggered by MIDI, so that's convenient; because they're much easier to work with I'll typically make 3-4 scenes combining different FX and trigger them via MIDI, so - for me - it's more deliberate than SE
Shaperbox is a completely different thing, IMO - it's not as much a "f**k s**t up" machine, but rather something that introduces movement and dynamism to otherwise static(y) sounds; it's not nearly as aggressive and crazy as the other three

You can use SE2 without MIDI with the so called AUTO mode (i always use it that way)

I use Stutter Edit in every uptempo track just to create these weird turns and accents at the end of a phrase. Quick and easy to come up with something interesting, if only playing presets.

ShaperBox feels more like an engineer's tool with precise controls over every aspect of the sound. Didn't try to use it for completely unseen sequences yes. Mostly just use VolumeShaper for volume control (obviusly) and sometimes TimeShaper for tape stop effect or to rearrange drum loops.

How would you compare Looperator by Sugar Bytes to the others?

I tested a few glitchers out a while back (before SE2 existed) and thought that Sugar Bytes Turnado offered the most possibilities.

I downloaded the demoes for each one. Stutter Edit 2 is an improvement on SE1, but still a little "crazy" for me.
As is Glitch2. Shaperbox is more musical and subtle, and I like a handful of presets but maybe not enough to buy it.

Thanks for this thread! I remember playing with the Glitch2 demo a while back, and now it's on sale. Easy pickup decision.
