Ok, so some weeks already after XP SP2 release I'd like to listen to some feedback. Are people having trouble whith audiosoft? Is it worth to update? I'm specially interested in knowing if the firewall can be switched off, as I use 3rd party firewall already. Also, any tuning tips for better audio performance in SP2 other than the usual ones?

i removed it.

also if you do remove it, it uninstalls a bunch of previous security patches (like the blaster worm) :x

what if you just turn it off instead of removing it?

The XP firewall can indeed be turned off. I think it turns itself off by default if it spots a third party firewall too.

Any specific reason why you turned it off? Did it cause problems?

I updated with SP2 and personally I've had no problems. I think a lot of problems actually stem from people's distrust of Microsoft, rather than the problems caused by the actual software.

Well, that's my experience...

I installed it on my laptop and I have not seen any problems. But I have not yet dared install it on my DAW...

I agree.

That "m$ sux0rs" thing is getting old. Most of us DAW workforce are pretty much stuck to windows. Better try to make the best of it instead.

also, no SP2 related trouble here whatsoever either. But then again, I did a slipstreamed clean install.

There are surely reasons to fear this update to Windows. Some of which are:

Firewire ports drop to 100mb/s

Printers often take longer to run things through the spooler.

My whole system ran ALOT slower after installing it.

I installed some software after installing SP2, then I decided to remove SP2. I received a Microsoft warning that the software I installed would not run correctly if I uninstalled SP2. Why the heck would that happen? I'm positive my software was not reliant on any of SP2's features.

As you can see not all of these problems are specifically audio related, but they are still problems. They are enough of a reason for me to not want SP2 on any of my systems.

I am mainly concerned about the reports I see about SP2 and problems with networks. My setup fepends on my network as I use 2 computers with FX teleport.

The firewire problem is getting an update whithin the following days, while I think things should be better performance wise doing a clean winxp sp2 install. Anyone else experimenting a performance drop after update?

No problems on my DAW after I installed it. Of course, I did have to turn some things off that MS enabled by default, but other than that all is well, My system even seems to be booting faster.

my automatic update install tried yesterday
about 45 minutes into the install, I got a little red message box that said 'Access Denied'. When I clicked on that, the system proceeeded to uninstall SP2.
Any idea what might have caused something like that?
if I can't install SP2 I presume I then can't install any updates following that?

I'm very happy with it.

Are you running any firewall software? I found I had to uninstall Noton Internet security before SP2 would install. PS. I did not bother to re-install that piece of cr@p again. Even though I have another 9 months before my licence expire, I moved to a different virus protection / firewall software now.
