Hi, sorry if i'm in the wrong thread.

Is there a situation in which I would need to buy a patent to create a song a certain genre that is already on the market? Example: top hit music.

Also, how do I fall into a music genre; legally?

So, I basically want to make cutting edge music. Do I need to purchase like for example, a Patent to do a certain genre? Also, could I? Even if it isnt required.

Thanks,

no. i think you mean copyright, not patent. either way a copyright will protect the songs you write and you can't protect a song you haven't written yet. there's nothing you need to do ahead of time to publish anything in any genre since those can't have a copyright.

once your song is done the copyright is automatic in 95% of the world. if you want you can pay a bit to register the copyright (see link below). the copyright is only part of it though. you have to be prepared to defend it in court if necessary, and that's a whole thing in itself. tons of stories of people having beats and songs stolen from them with very little recourse.

there are no legal genres, or more accurately, the law does not care what kind of music you're producing. if there's any kind of legal challenge genre does not factor in. i think the international genre police force was disbanded due to covid. as far as classifying your music goes for things like soundcloud or youtube, pick a genre that already has some traction.

if i were you i'd wait until you start to catch some popularity and then spend a few hundred bucks to talk to an entertainment lawyer. this kind of stuff can get complicated quickly and small mistakes can have big impacts. leave it to a pro if you can. you don't want to stand in front of a judge and say "according to drippy_salmon95 on kvr my copyright is valid and i get all the money!!" :)

If you are making satanic music you have to ask Ozzy first.

Yes, good news! I happen to be selling patents for cutting edge music for the low, low price of only $9,999.99.

You wouldn't want your music to have a dull edge? Buy a cutting edge patent now while supplies last! Operators are standing buy. Call 1-800-EDGEMZK. :wheee:
