Disappointed with Soundspot Evade

I got Evade during the current 90% off sale, so it's not a huge deal that I didn't end up getting what I thought I was purchasing. I'm really just disappointed with the company. The page for the product talks a lot about sidechaining but never mentions once that the product does not include a sidechain input, so its "Sidechain effect" is simulated.

At first I thought that I just wasn't able to find the sidechain input so I sent this message to customer support:

Can't find the sidechain in Evade sidechain. Does it actually have a real sidechain function?

Here is the response I received:

Evade is indeed a Sidechain effect. The main window will allow you to control the shape and frequency area that you wish to affect.

You will need to press play on your project in order for Evade to begin working.

There was no video link and definitely no mention of a sidechain input signal. I guess maybe Evade is sidechain in the same way some VSTs are analog. Is that why they keep capitalizing sidechain, to avoid claims of deception? It's not sidechain, it's "Sidechain".

If you are looking for a real sidechain plugin, avoid Evade.

Well, reading the product description i clearly got that it is a volume envelope shaper, simulating sidechain compression effect. Got laugh from the price at $109. Though i would avoid Soundspot plugins no matter the price.

Your frustration and disappointment is understandable. I think the confusion is because "the side chain effect" iis that specific sound of driving the gain with an envelope derived from the kick drum in EDM etc. Soundspot is correct in calling their plugin a "side chain effect" because it creates that effect... but without a specific side-chain input. It would be easy to assume this plugin includes a side-chain but I don't think Soundspot was incorrect in how they descibed it other than it could cause confusion and it relies on the customer knowing what "the side chain effect" is. They would do well to clarify this to avoid that confusion.

For Evolve, they are correct in calling it a side-chain effect because the audio envelope (the "module") has it's gain parameter controlled by an signal that is not the signal being effected.

There aren't many effects that aren't sidechain effects if you use that definition.

Another one that does this is BSharry Side Chainer by Hornet Plugins - the pumping effect without an actual side chain. They are not supposed to be anything more than a short cut to kick/bass side chain compression. Slap it on a 4-to-the-floor-track, done.

Actually for the dime many Soundspot products are quick and useful to me although I don't really care for devs of the products since they lack in areas but I do find them in use at times
