I've never used a looper. (Back in 78 I got a Roland RE301 Chorus Echo that I used for kinda looping, but that worked differently than how modern loopers do, and thank goodness for the improvement.)
KVR lists 4 freebies, but unfortunately none of them quite worked out. Loopy Llama seems to have disappeared. Mobius is 32-bit only. Regen does nothing when I try to load it into VSTHost (no error message, no plugin appears, nothing.)
Instalooper plugs in and seems to work, but even after reading the instructions I have no clue how to use it, and I don't think it would work well as a live tool. Maybe it would, along with mapping MIDI messages to controls, but only if I had a clue how to actually use it. Any tips?
What I want is something very simple, so I can learn to do this first -- then complications later as needed.
If I can't find what I want, I might just write one. I wrote a very simple VST before so I'm sure I could do it (but no fancy GUI since I'm not a GUI guy, though it'd be free/open-source and if someone wants to add one, great!)
In addition to any recommendations anyone may have, I'd also like to learn how they actually work. From reading other posts and explanations and writeups on existing loopers (including pedals) I have a general idea but haven't quite grasped the details. I'm thinking it works something like this:
- Start playing, get even tempo & groove going
- stomp to start recording
- stomp to end recording. The loop immediately begins repeating.
- ... ? ... this is the part I'm puzzled about
- stop the loop
- start recording a new loop to replace the old loop
- record a new loop to layer with the old loop (for my use, it should have the same start/stop points)
The signals are single-stomp, double-stomp, and long stomp. Of course, with two buttons we have a lot more options. If I were to code one, I'd provide the ability to configure the signal for each operation. The trick is defining the operations for the most seamless use.
Thanks!
