Im looking to upgrade my soundcard first i'll tell you my set up as this may help.

Cubase sx 2.2 (various vst instruments)
Reason 2.5
pentium 2.8
1 gig DDR memory
evolution MK-249c & UC-33
M-audio midi sport 2x2
current soundcard is a Terratec DMX6fire 24/96 i also have A Access virus c and an old quasimidi rave-o-lution 309.
The music i make i call electronica (think you get the picture)

Im thinking of spending around £400/£500 (english pounds)...Whats a good reliable/solid performer soundcard around this range ?

Are you going to sell the Terratec DMX6fire 24/96, and if you do so, how much do you want for it ?

Sorry, can't give you any soundcard advice as I'm myself still on a sblive live

I would recommend the EMU 1820m

I paid £345 delivered from here

Its a very good sound card, and has many many things I will never work out how to use (

Obviously im gonna look more into this but ive stuck the EMU 1820M on my short list it does look a good card , ill search a few forums and see if there any problems related to it...

I'm not sure of the current prices, but I would think you could get an Aardvark Q10 for that money? Certainly some kind of Aardvark anyway.

They have crystal clear converters, very well shielded with no noise, SoS reckon they have the best wordclocking, and they have a well featured and versatile routing set (they work with any format in any configuration). They are garaunteed to stack up glitch-free (I think it's up to 4 Aardvark cards in one PC) should you ever want to upgrade - so you just buy another one to double your in/outs. And this part of the world, alot of broadcast facilities use them. The top Aardvarks apparently have well-regarded mic pre.s too.

And I can vouch for top-notch support. Had a problem with some VSTi's a while back, and I contacted Aardvark & received an updated specific driver the next day. And it worked perfectly ever since.

Aardvarks do tend to be at the upper end of the price bracket, but they really are clean. The Aardvark routing/mixer page is an added bonus too - you can route any of the ins to outs, monitor in any way you want, it has test tones and things like test silences so you can identify noise problems if you get any. A useful Eq and comp on the inputs (switchable off if you don't want them)...Eq I don't tend to use unless I know I definitely want to low-cut, but the comps can be useful to avoid any unwanted clipping without having to patch in any h/w or s/w comps.

Lots of little extras, but mainly, a crystal clear sound.

How do you want to hook everything up though? Directly to the sound card, I take it? Thought about going through a mixer? Just thoughts and ideas. Telling us the equipment list is just the beginning.

Although i have the access virus C im not planning on buying anymore hardware i want to run everything from within the PC plus be quite honest i don't have the room either..so im not interested in going through a mixer ,
Thanx kritikon for pointing in the direction of Aarvark cards these sound interesting im going to do a bit more surfing on the subject

Let me ask the most obvious question first: Why do you want a new soundcard? What is wrong with the Terratec? You do not need more inputs if you are making electronic music. If you had more hardware devices and need extra midi inputs, keep your DMX and get a M4U midi inout device. If you need more audio inputs get a soundcard with more audio inputs like Echo or M-Audio. In your case it does not sound like any is true, so my advice is to keep your soundcard, let your friend buy his / her own cheap card and spend your money on upgrading other things.

To be honest the only reason im after a new soundcard is that when i read reviews like a "Aardvark" card for example they always state how great the sound is.....

Now i was just making electronica & uploading music on the web for fun and no other motive when out the blue a small record label contacted me & offered me an album deal they have a very good sound engineer on the books and a good distributer so lucky for me the album will appear on shop shelves , Don't worry i live in the real world so if i sell 50 copies ill be amazed but the label manager has a lot of faith in me. so because of this im having doubts about my terratec and thinking maybe i need a more upmarket card ?
