Does anyone know where this 90s brass/orch hit sample comes from?

I first assumed it was from a ROMpler, but people have told me they think it's probably from a sample pack. It's not from the Zero-G Datafiles, which is a usual suspect when it comes to 90s house music. It's also not from the Korg M1 or Proteus VX.

I'm thinking....one of the early 90s Roland modules maybe? I could swear it was included in my XV5080 which was a kind of souped up gathering of all the 90s JV modules on speed
Actually I dunno - just wanted to show my lovin' for everything related to Smack productions! They were awesome!

Post

Mirage maybe? Or there was a drum machine I think had something similar - Kawai or Casio? Or could even be a Casio FZ?

I am not sure what brass/orch hit you speak of in the first video, I for sure dont' hear one at 14 seconds or so,
the second video doesn't play at all for me in Jamaica.

But every Roland module I have had (S-760, JV 1080, 2080) always had tons of Brass/Orchestra Hits.

Yamaha PSS31 orchestra hit sounds very similar. Just at a lower key in your 2nd example.

Thanks for your suggestion! Yes, there is nothing else quite like Smack Productions, in my opinion. Absolute top-tier house music.

Thank you, I will check those out. Does this video work for you?

oh I can hear that video.. is it the Brass falls you are asking about? I actually had such a sound on my Proteus 1XR if I recall properly..... That long ago parted ways with me.

Thank you, that may be it. I found this preset called "Big City Brass" on it, it sounds very similar:

That one didn't fall.

Around 6:31... if you click on the link not the preview it should roughly take you there.
That may be one of the two possibilities from the Proteus.

I think it is more the latter..

If it is indeed that sound the only legal way to get it that I know of (beyond of course a Proteus on ebay :)) is
somewhere here

oh wait I just remember I do have an Emu emulator X or whatever it is called on my PC (haven't used it in years) let me see if I have that patch on it.

(alas I couldn't find that patch on the Emulator X)

I could bet your 3rd example is a Zero-G Phantom Horns phrase ending with a fall accent.

It sounded similar to my ears, you could make it fall with effects. But yeah, the fall one sounds similar also. It sounds less "powerful", maybe Eddie (producer of these tracks) stack the sound over 2-3 octaves. Whatever, I will figure out that as long as I have the sound :hihi:. I appreciate your info you've posted!

Most welcome...... I use to use the proteus falls very often in the 90s if I recall.. I think I would use to patches.... one to do the meat and one to do the falls.. but well, that was almost 30 years ago. memory fades :)

Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestion, I've heard that before about this sound. I will check that out too.
