Hi
Brief history in my music experience - generalising:
1990s to present: Amiga music, Pop, trance, atb, Robert miles, Metallica, aphex twin, Venetian snares, all the idm scene, slipknot..
2017 got into nostalgic music from bitjam podcast - Amiga days - (incredibly good) it has a wide variety but plenty of keygen, tracker music, demo scene.
So come 2020, I listen to occasional song on Spotify, still mostly on bitjam.
Then I read some article about a tragic death of an artist called SOPHIE. The image of her/him intrigues me and I wondered what happened.
A few weeks later and I’ve listened to about 20 or so songs by SOPHIE.
I gave up with the “idm” scene because it just lacked in imagination, varied instruments, sounds. But SOPHIE I realised was already onto something huge. Their talent was just wild.
If you are a fan of aphex twin and the idm scene back in the day, and perhaps moved on long ago, do yourself a favour and listen to a couple of the links below.
I want to reiterate - whilst I loved/ and like aphex twin, I honestly don’t think he had the kind of wide scope Sophie did. This was a tragedy and I am extremely confident in saying that if you just listen to the stuff he output, the imagination, sound design, thought... it is more impressive than all, if not most of what was heard back in the idm days.
Check the second track especially.
Sure, perhaps it’s all just me and I’m missing a ton of incredibly talented artists really outputting some high quality original stuff, and you’re welcome to suggest. But I have looked and I’m not seeing any. The talent from the demoscene, which is featured on bitjam is very impressive but I’ve not seen a particular artist output so much impressive music.
The only other one I’m aware of due to my limited time in music listening is:
Francis and the lights
Quick reflection at “idm”, and my recent experience inc SOPHIE

Rest in peace SOPHIE, gone way too soon. One of the defining electronic music artists of our times for sure

There’s a whole scene of hyperpop like this (search Spotify for hyperpop to find playlists)
I am rather partial to 100 gecs and Dorian Electra

I'm ashamed to say I too only just discovered SOPHIE after her passing. So sad, such a huge talent.
