Hi,

Piano roll in Ableton is so basic compared to other daws, it's missing all the midi tools(strum, chop etc) and music scales helpers (stamps, scale highlights etc). How you overcome these limits? Using another daw for midi editing? or some vst midi editor?

There's a good chance that there are Max4Live plugins that cover what you need (cant reccomend any in particular) ...

I can't remember the responsiveness of it in the previous pre AL11 versions but it seems perfectly usable in L11(checked it around b22 or something)

How about you switch your perspective to a more nuanced and balanced one?

1) Those are not "basic" features - they're pretty advanced ones & only few DAWs, or even one, have them

2) Not every person needs them, as those are only "helpers" that make certain things easier & faster, but are otherwise still possible. Also, many people can play the notes in, others' productions might be focused on sounds & rhythms rather than melodies & chords, etc.

3) As great as those features sound, they're native to a DAW that has such a litanny of ridiculous workflow shortcomings and design peculiarities, that they in no way compensate for that. One feature does not make a DAW.

btw. AL 11 has a scale helper so this issue has been solved

I just bought a guitar. It has 6 strings that I have to learn to tune that makes sense and than with my one hands fingers I have to press that strings and also use my other hand with a plastic to pluck those strings to create melodies, chords, rhythm and strums but there are no helpers like scaler, chopper, auto strummer. It s a very limited instrument. How do you overcome these limits?

You smash it on the floor! I've seen a lot of pros doing that after they've been frustrated trying to play it at a concert or a gig.

Not sure if this helps :(

You can't even rebind key shortcuts in Live. I don't think we'll see any kind of serious workflow improvements from them any time soon, if ever. Live seems to be focused on loop-based music with relatively simple piano roll inputs.

I don't need most of those 'helpers'.

(I'm not using Live these days), but when I did, I recorded midi playing in realtime. If I did not play it to my satisfaction, I re-recorded it again. I only did minimal editing (cause I don't find it fun)

When I wanted to do something that was beyond my skill to play in realtime, I used Midi Step Input which is well implemented in Live.

And yet people make incredible music with it and its one of the most popular DAWs. As basic as the PR is in Ableton people just get on with making music with it. I've never used strum or anything like that myself. I just draw it in if I need to, but more often than not I just play until I get it right.

That being said there are other more basic tools I would love to have like a Knife tool. A decent knife tool would make things like strums super easy to do.

Reason's solution was to have a little floating tool window for augmenting the MIDI editing features and then realtime Player racks you can insert for additional things like scales, chords, repeaters, arpeggiators etc. Since they're all optional, the piano roll retains its un-bloated simplicity if you don't need them. I understand people's desire for more sophisticated, native pianoroll editors though. There's probably a happy medium between both extremes, I just haven't found it yet.

The best piano roll has FL Studio, there you have many of that and more features integrated and with a few additional MIDI plugins you have everthing. And yes, Ableton misses many basic features, but their fans don't need them, they're just happy with marketing bla bla ... :D
