Ohmicide

So I got a new MacBook, got big sur, found out ohmicide wasn’t working so i went back to Catalina. Kind of made me realise how much I rely on ohmicide and it looks like it’s dying software so Im looking for something similar.

Any suggestions for 2021? I’ve already got decapitator and trash but still on the search for anything similar.... the soft clip algorithm in ohmicide in particular... it seems so simple but honestly nothing else sounds like it when you really push it.

Nothing exactly like it. Depending on what you like about it, you may like specific algorithms in FabFilter Saturn 2 or Cableguys DriveShaper. I personally like the NI pack of effects but I don’t think they’re MacOS 11, yet

You can get close with Melda mxxx. It won't be nearly as quick though. Sorry. There isn't much that is as flexible.

Do you know Unfiltered Audio Dent 2?It is not multi band,but it has a pretty nasty soft clipping algorithm among some others.I don't use it often because it is not the kind of sound I like much but It can be tricky sometimes.

No single plugin can replace it or is like it. It's not just the algorithms but the workflow. It's multiband but deadass simple. Distortion depends heavily on the input gain and the way you can trim and shape each one so it just kisses the edge of oblivion is unparalleled. The three-state algorithm modifier selection (Normal, Xxx, Odd) is special, as most other plugins opt for a single, continuous range (Decapitator comes close with "Punish"). You can find what you want fast and it sounds great.

Ohm Force intimated they are going to update the whole portfolio following their delay plugin launch but who knows when any of that is so I'm going to keep using Ohmicide as long as I can (I'm on PC but I empathize).

Yes, that soft clip is fantastic. It's hard if not impossible to draw the waveshape in any other plugin, at max it's like a series of square waves, fat/sharp literally makes the edges round/sharp, and as gain decreases, it angles and gets smoother. I haven't found any other plugin that has this waveshape. Trash 2 has a ratcheting waveshaper but you cannot achieve square shapes, only triangles and rounded curves. You can achieve squares in MWaveShaper/MB but you have to a draw a ton of nodes and you'd have to redraw each intermediate stage.

The fundamental issue is that the soft clip (and several of the algorithms) does not model any hardware as far as I can tell. I'm not 100% certain but I don't think analog hardware is actually capable of producing that exact waveshape. So anything purporting to be or based on analog distortion is out of the running. There are proudly digital distortions like in Unfiltered Audio's products (Gloubi algorithm is really good) but they are nothing like that shape and to get multiband with UA you need Triad. The fact Ohm Force did the research to create waveshapes that did not previously exist until they found good-sounding ones is what makes Ohmicide so good after all these years.

There's Tantrum and Temper by Creative Intent which has a waveshaper which works similarly to Ohimicides XXX mode. It applies the function to the phase rather than amplitude.

Yeah I bought Ohmicide in past year, was going to sell it but it does have some worth but GUI is like all their stuff fed up. But it sounds good.
