given my troubles (brought on myself)
with getting XP to work, I decided to re-install XP.

In doing so it asked for the name of the computer. I gave it what I'm pretty sure is a new name.

So is it this new name or the re-install of the OS that is causing almost all my programs to want to be re-registered?

unfortunately, meanwhile there's increasing evidence of flaky behavior (files that can't be deleted. files that can't be loaded or found on install disks) that tells me it may just be a coincidence with all these SP2 issues and my system is just heading south

You took the option to keep your install in place then I take it, and NOT fresh reinstall? Just checking.

i took that option of keeping my install in place and repair/restore 'R' option and that contiued to com eup with files it couldn't find and files it couldn't load -- errors that did not stop setup, but eventually led to certain programs no longer working or drivers unable to initialize

So, I did a fresh install -- and where before programs and drivers were recognized and just wouldn't work, now they're not recognized, but if I reinstall and re-register, they seem to be working as far as I've gotten in the process (which isn't very far at all)

(although FLStudio did require installing twice and
in deleting the old folder wouldn't allow me to delete fonts of all things) (hence the worry that things have just gone flaky)

Sometimes you just have to wipe the drive COMPLETELY, and start from scratch. Even installing to just a new directory doesn't clean up things like Program Folders, etc.

I'm thinking about doing a reformat of my drive. It's got a lot of miles on it. Is this gonna coz havoc with the challenge/response registration of Native Instrument synths (and a motley collection of others)? Don't know if I have what it takes to do such a thing. Thanks.

A reformat shouldn't change for the NI stuff. A new drive in its place WILL (trust me, I know.

I feel your pain

I recently had my own problems after installing service pack 2 (DON'T DO IT! DON'T DO IT!)

the tech told me the problem was most likely some spyware had probably overwritten some windows files with their own (something about the spayware being able to re-install itself that way)

I also have a HP computer that came with no XP disc
(partitioned drive)
For some reason I do not know I can not re-install while keeping files.It simply freezes when the re-install is nearly complete and the only way to fix it is to wipe the drive clean.

for better or worse things seem to be stabilizing

i had spyware on my system on the initial attempt to install SP2 (which is against all advisories)
when it still didn't work I killed the install when it was busy uninstalling
i was not in a good mood and this sort of self-destructive impulsive behavior has a price and I am paying it -- digging out of a very large hole

this is one case where certain software with is much more appreciated than others

actually it's much for the better
my question the other day about how P-5 could sound so different from Sonar has been resolved with this fresh install\

now they sound identical\
who knew?

and don't ask me how, but the cpu usage seems lower as well
i'd recommend 4 days of re-installing on a clean system for everyone
