safe to upgrade to Logic 16.1?

This is a noobie question, and I apologize for that.
I am using Logic Pro 10.5 on Catalina.
I am considering upgrading to 10.6.1.

But can I do that without upgrading to Big Sur? I don't want to upgrade to Big Sur right now because I am bigly sure that many of the plugins I use will run into problems. Can I upgrade to Logic 10.6.1 and stay on Catalina? And is that a stable combination?

And are plugin companies running into problems with Logic 10.6.1 on Catalina? I've seen a lot of worries about Big Sur. But have there been problems for 10.6.1 alone, not on Big Sur?

Thank you!!! :) :) :) :)
Why'd you slice off my hand?

An upgrade of Logic is usually save if they allow it at all... I can’t as I am still on Mojave and don’t plan to move on before I get a new armed Mac...

I mostly use Bitwig, but sometimes use Logic and 10.6.1 is running fine for me on Catalina.

So you can happily upgrade Logic!

I'm also using Logic 10.6.1 on Catalina without issue (and, like the OP, I'll be waiting quite a while before upgrading the OS further, whether to Big Sur or maybe skipping Big Sur and just going with whatever ultimately follows).

No issues on Catalina here. 10.6.1 have been running it since it was released. Rock solid.
Studio One // Bitwig // Logic Pro // Ableton // Reason // FLStudio // MPC // Force // Maschine

Just back up your Logic 10.5 somewhere or rename it just in case. When it is gone it is gone. You can not download it anymore but overall 10.6.1 runs fine on Catalina.

To back up Logic, two finger click on the Logic file in your applications folder and compress.

10.6.1 fixed a few bugs I had in 10.5 and runs fine on Catalina for me. If you have an iPad you now can use Logic Remote to enter step sequence patterns.

Logic Remote is awesome!

Thanks, that's a good suggestion. I'll do a time machine back up too.

The other thing I wondered--have there been issues with thirdparty plugin compatibility? I've heard lots of problems about Big Sur, but wondering if there are any reasons to be nervous about the latest version of logic per se, on Catalina, with third party plugins.

Most 3rd Party vendors had Catalina support a year ago. While some may remain, the bulk have now begun to certify on Big Sur using Rosetta 2 or native support of Apple Silicon.

I'll note that you should hold off if you have any Elektron gear, as Overbridge is not compatible with Logic 10.6, and there isn't a timeline to fix it, as they're still trying to fix OB on Big Sur.

10.6.1 doesn't work with Overbridge on Catalina? I only use Overbridge with Bitwig

Not according to their post on their official forum.

Good to know... now I wont bother trying... :hihi:

Bitwig is my main DAW, especially for working with my hardware gear.

Every so often I'll glance over at Bitwig out of curiosity because I admit it looks like a fun DAW, but I generally have no beef with Logic and 400 bux a year for updates is just... wfoof for a hobbyist y'know :/
