I'm straight fed up with this "we're careless with your data because being careful doesn't suit our priorities" bullshit.

this is what happened to me this weekend at a Dairy Queen
I went to one with Holly, we pulled up to the sign where it said pick up orders here, we got our phones, checked the menu online, found what we wanted and called. I was told they dont take phone orders and we had to download the app or go in, it was a small place and neither of us (both senior citizens but holly needs a scooter) wanted to go in. I found the app, downloaded it but saw they wanted too much info, deleted it and went elsewhere.
I got home, I had an email from DQ saying congrats on my app, it's already to use...wait what? I called them and got the most absurd call center. I asked for their legal department to contact me and I ASKED FOR A LETTER STATING THAT ALL MY PERSONAL INFO HAD BEEN DELETED FROM THEIR SYSTEM, (oops, sorry) I also contacted the Maine Attorney General. I actually felt stupid about that, but I was told I did the right thing and there were ways to handle this but she felt what I did was pretty good.
I get an email back giving me a link to go opt out....first my response to them
"
Hello, please be aware that this afternoon I contacted the Maine Attorney General, this acquisition of my information was not voluntary on my part, I did not fill out the required information. I did download the app from the google app store only, the atty gen advised me I had valid concerns and praised my remedy. They then suggested if you did not comply, I could request mediation through the state of Maine. As this kind of opting out often takes considerable amount of time, often you never know if it went through or it doesn't and the fact that the information was not volunteered by me, I feel more comfortable having confirmation in writing from you saying it has been removed.
While I do understand this is not customary it can be done and is the proper thing to do, otherwise I will be inclined to seek remedy through the state."
Their reply
"Dear John,
Thank you for your follow up message. I would be happy to connect with the DQ Privacy team to get started on your request, and I wanted to ask a follow up question while doing so.
One of the purposes of the previously linked website form is to define the scope of the request. To verify, are you seeking to fully delete all your information from the DQ Mobile App system?
Are there any other locations you are seeking to delete any such information from? (such as the Blizzard Fan Club email list, any Fan Relations / Customer Service contacts, this email chain, etc.)?
Once you’ve verified the scope of your request, I would be happy to connect with the Privacy team to start this process right away for you.
From the information I have here, this process may take between 1 to 2 weeks’ time to fully remove any information from our systems (depending on the scope of the request), at which point you would receive a confirmation email so you would know this process has been completed.
I look forward to hearing from you soon."

folks be careful, google and apple might be giving your personal info away without your knowledge...ftr the state did also say to file a complaint with the ftc...they too saw concern in this...she mentioned it might be in the fine print when you download "

And people wonder why the app market is cooling. I install very few small vendor apps for this very reason. No drug stores, no fast food chains, none of that. I only install apps that have a high impact on my life. If you need me to install your special little app to make an order then, guess what, you won't get my money.

regarding add-on apps: Shutting off or disabling all the "for your convenience" crap that is already on the phone is enough of a PITA. I don't/won't install any apps (other than a couple of sound generators), because I don't/won't (and never have) use(d) my 'phone' for any web related/dependent activity. I've never used "cloud storage" for anything, or the built in 'share' (upload to) "feature" of any apps (phone or computer), nor transferred anything from my phones using wi-fi, but directly transfer photos and video via USB cable to my computer. I hate all of that dumbed-down info gathering "convenience" crap. [end mini rant]
I'm not a musician, but I've designed sounds that others use to make music. http://soundcloud.com/obsidiananvil

yeah, I usually dont and in this case we didnt completely as we chose not to complete the app...ftr Dairy queen? Not me, Maine is full of locally owned amazing drive ins and tis the season, one in my town (Bucksport) opened last Tuesday for the season and I went there for the second time this year today.
I have never used a cloud storage either, the only time I would is if my cable company allowed me cloud service for my dvr, that would be nice but I never even used Amazon's cloud service for music. I do use wifi/bluetooth for my gamecam sometimes so I can communicate and download pics from that, but not often because the only place I am in range is on the loo
I have an app from my local grocery chain, I get 2% back for everything I spend on their brand quarterly, I appreciate it because I am kinda cheap and buy a lot of generic stuff
