@dirtgrain Hey! Thanks so much, really appreciated. An old style track with a new style synth! The solo piano sound is just one preset and one layer. The stride piano is 2 piano tracks with slightly differing presets to take account of the higher and lower registers required. Bass is 2 tracks, one for the attack phase and one for the bass body.

Hi everyone, I would like to ask how deep I can use equalization, and also about using mastering filters (like this) or filters at all:
LCF_2.jpg
This is a gray area, as I understand it, the rules say almost nothing about it, so I want to know the opinion of experienced participants, based on experience and common sense. I want to take MPS, with it you can create beautiful sounds ridiculously simple, but it has almost no tools for sound formation.
P.S. A separate request / suggestion for Mr. Bjorn: it would be great to implement resetting the x/y joystick to 0/0 when double-clicking, like the other faders, it would help a lot in creating presets from 0)

You're absolutely fine to use EQ and filters IV. If I use a filter external to the synth it's either to spread across a group of layered sounds (high pass on bass layers for example) or to tame unwanted frequencies say on the lead for the final mix. I don't tend to lowpass or highpass the full track myself unless that was a spot effect on a breakdown which I guess depends on the composition / mood.

Post

The only real exception would be a very narrow bandpass which was swept and creating an effect and sound probably changing the character of the synth output completely.

I usually find some EQ on the master can be useful to tame the very high frequencies - my aged hearing means I need to watch the output from SPAN as I do it! :)

I don't use Reaper, so I was thinking GSnap...

What's the thinking behind not allowing it? It seems a little arbitrary, unless there's something I'm missing.
I'm a bit late to the party, but here's my thoughts on this particular one:
GSnap is great, but it really messes with the formants of a sound when it does correction - that's fine outside of OSC (definitely something worth experimenting with) but problematic in the OSC context because that's a major change of the tone of a sound that didn't happen within the synth.

Even MAutoPitch, which is a bit more subtle, still introduces artifacts like that (and has a built-in formant control knob which is definitely out of bounds here)

As much as I love creative experimentation with the wide universe of music making tools out there, I also like having fairly clear lines when it comes to this competition. it's a balancing act and this is just where a line was drawn

Here is my submission, using ModulAir.

https://soundcloud.com/treeheated/conversation

I was excited to try out a properly modular synth for the first time. To begin with, it was kind of like playing a puzzle game - "What? My instrument's not velocity sensitive! Oh, I have to add that myself - how do I do that?" It was pretty fun. ModulAir seems hugely versatile and sounds great. On the other hand, once I got used to it, I found setting up new instruments to be a slow and repetitive process, which is probably an unavoidable aspect of this style of synth.

I found that at first as well, but the way I use it now, I never think about it:

I always define the synth first, and save it as a "blank synth preset" in a dedicated "synth" bank: For example, Synth 1 has three oscillators, two filters, two envelopes, two lfo's, saturation and a master section with reverb and delay. Synth 2 has 4 FM units, 4 envelopes and three lfo's with a delay and a phaser on the master, etc. etc.

If I know I'm going for something FM-like, I have setups for 2,4 or 6 FM units - if I'm going for something subtractive, I've got my Juno setup. I rarely start from scratch anymore. If I want to get creative and mix things up a bit, bada bing, bada boom, one unit out, another one in. It's a powerful feeling - it's like having dozens of synths at your disposal within the same synth.

I see what you mean. I made my track without checking out your bank (it's superb). Chalk it up to Not Invented Here syndrome. Or maybe, more positively, a feeling that I'd get a good educational experience trying to make all my sounds myself. I made some by duplicating others and adding to them, but I never felt like I'd made a very general structure that I could make a lot of instruments from. If I settle on this (or some other) modular synth as a tool that I use a lot, I'll do just as you said.

Hi friendly OSClers,

again and again: after a long time i am back to this great OSC for Björns synth :hyper:
This time it was easy to choose the right synth for me: Tricent MK III.

For this purpose I created some new sounds, using existing ones from my somewhat large preset pool. The track is something different in the style to the last ones from me ;)

All of my presets in this track will be available for download under
