Any takers of the Eurovision Song Contest?
I kept scores with just pluses and minuses. 5 of the 16 songs of last night got a plus from me. Just a couple double pluses or minuses, 10 got one minus which then means I find it mediocre.
Sweden, Israel & Ukraine: I agree these should go through.
Russia: the only song I had scored double-minus. One chord drone, more rap than singing, the act with the dress... Just did not like it at all. Still it got through.
To my surprise the only two songs I had marked with double-plus did not get through.
Australia had an interesting act, interesting song. Ireland as well, that was my personal favourite.
And big surprise: Belgium act Hooverphonic got through! Not a fan of that personally, but I'm happy for them. Usually the Walons tend to score a bit but Flemish never do. Not this time!
Oh, why was our Donkey Tugger on stage with the German act?

Actually, what impressed me most last Tuesday was the intermezzo act of Dutch youtube star Davina Michelle (about our fight with water). If that act entered the competition, it would be in the top ten.
Let's see what's on tonight...

What to expect tonight, in alphabetical order:
- Albania sent a good singer. Not likely top-5...
- Azerbedjan has hardly any melody, stays on one chord for the whole song, droning with the zurla on the background, showing cobra graphics, and none of that has anything to do with Mata Hari.
- Belgium sent in Hooverphonic. They are sooo out of place here. Mainstream is not their thing, they excel at other things. Would be nice to see them win, but the chance is very slim.
- Bulgaria wrote a pure song. Not likely top-5...
- Cyprus tried to clone Lady Gaga, but not with much success.
- France being French, using all the cliches. And getting away with it. Think she'd better wear a petite robe noir though.
- Finland I respond with my middle finger as well.
- Germany. Is that really donkey tugger jumping on stage?
- Greece has a catchy pop song sung by a Dutch girl from my town. How can I not like that?
- Iceland top contender with nerdy anti-act. Want one of those bent keytars!
- Israel nice pop tune, the obligatory dress change act (executed properly), what else to say, a bit controversial as always.
- Italy has a song inspired on the old Rush stuff. The tattoos put me off though.
- Lithuania disco in yellow suits doing a silly dance. Not my cup of tea, but has a good chance to win.
- Malta shows how a good singer can lift up a mediocre song. But if she keeps gaining a stone per year...
- Moldavia got qualified on looks only, can't sing in tune.
- Netherlands not bad and special, but no chance to win. Which is good because it's impolite for the host to win.
- Norway has that guy with wings in chains and Alice Cooper glasses. Can't remember the song, so...
- Portugal brought back the orchestra in silhouette. Like that. Don't like his voice that much, too bad the guitar solo is mimed.
- Russia. Girl in red boilersuit, smells a bit too much of propaganda.
- San Marino has Flo Rida with a reincarnation of Donna Summer. Not bad really.
- Serbia very limited vocally, nothing special
- Spain wasn't that bad. I think...
- Sweden has a simple song (Am C G F) but it's not bad.
- Switzerland sent a song produced by the team responsible for bringing the festival to Rotterdam, sounds much alike. Musically interesting. Had a video clip where he dragged himself out of a crashed car. Provoking emotions...
- United Kingdom made no lastinmg impression. Seems not to do their best to win, on purpose?
- Ukraine took their folklore into the modern age. Slowly raising the tempo up to a climax and breaking it down again. Like it.

Update: the UK gave 10 points to Iceland!
Raised from 7th to 4th preliminary position...
UK itself has no points yet.

we're not in the mood to host it after leaving, give us a few years to see how it goes
we may send someone half decent if it goes well

I'm OK with Italy winning, at least a genre I like

Last time I watched 5 minutes of it (can't bear more than that), it was a political piss fest (mainly against the Russian participants). Hope it's better this year (althought I'm doubtful... if anything, it gets worse and worse).

Not that I'm a follower of ESC either, and I haven't really watched a full show in 25+ years. But based on your post in the recent "zombie" thread, do you think anything is getting better, or is everything getting worse in the world?chk071 wrote: Sat May 22, 2021 11:33 pm Last time I watched 5 minutes of it (can't bear more than that), it was a political piss fest (mainly against the Russian participants). tbf, that's not a bad track, it just doesn't say eurovision to me at all
i lost any little interest i had many years ago, when all the eastern euro countries joined the "let's do pop" crowd, was far more enjoyable getting to see other cultures a little, rather than a mirror of your own mainstream.
we are just as bad, we could send more culturally significant stuff, it wouldn't win, but it would at least be fun. id love to see a colliery brass band for example, very nwuk. or some lovely welsh choral music
but no, let's send some boring pop we can hear any time on the radio
