What do you guys think of this?
Intriguing and interesting, for sure. For the ones using the app...

It will be forked. I also predict that the fork will eventually replace the "official" distro in Linux distros. The damage has been done and the Linux community is pretty unforgiving. It's more than just telemetry, aggressive and potentially GPL incompatible user agreement changes betray intent.
Oh, and yes, everyone is definitely getting sick of telemetry.

I posted about this a few weeks ago. The thread ended up in hyde park and then disappeared.
Yes, it will be forked, hopefully soon.

Good points.codec_spurt wrote: Tue Jul 06, 2021 7:43 pmIt may just be that everyone is getting sick of Telemetry when it doesn't really help the end user that much compared to the Dev. No matter what the devs claim.
And I think a lot of people who used it saw it as some kind of sacred cow in that department. Something that was a reliable gift to the community, free from all the bloat and spying that was present in other solutions. They kind of felt betrayed.
But this software is small potatoes really compared to your average piece of audio software these days that calls home and rummages around your home drive. Not all of them, ok, but more and more...

People are sick of telemetry. It's not practically optional, it will be turned on in the binary distributions. That you can avoid it by compiling from source isn't a solution. Whether it needs to be forked or simply made available in an alternate distribution ala VSCodium is a reasonable question. Once you get that scarlet T though, it's hard to shake, truth be damned. I've made it a point to no longer install Visual Studio Code on anything.

Not impressed. Company declares all kinds of changes, ppl freak out, company says ok we will skip some of that odious crap. That’s supposed to make it all ok. I’m completely sure that MuseGroup have no intentions of sneaking all that crap back in. It’s just silly (imo) to see the whole process as described. I’ll just fork off. Besides on one oldy machine i still have Cool Edit Pro
Lastly ars tech is mostly one big advertisement site with some admittedly very good news mixed in. I have no faith in any of the Conde Nast empire.

The great thing about free software, you get the code, you can check what it does. If audacity would change from opt out to opt in and only in a case of a crash, all would be good. A lot of free and closed source apps do exactly that…
This kind of discussion would just be less heated.
And remember Chrome, Googles browser, is open source and of course as its Google will track you to their liking. But you can use Brave which just throws out those parts and still they don’t need to do all the other development enhancements on their own. Each time Google updates to a more powerful version, they just take the code, eliminate the tracking parts and easily can keep up with all the innovations… Its kind of constantly forking the original sources…
Only open source gives us this sort of freedom…

Brave now has telemetry. I noticed that and turned it off in settings. I found that the checkbox existed surprising a bit, but not to a huge extent. It's fast and comfortable to use, hard to find anything perfect.
I don't make audio products anymore. I sell furniture & smart products.

The whole thing about telemetry is that there’s a conduit in place. Once in place it can be used or misused.
