Over the last couple of years I thought I would diversify and get more outboard gear to supplement my ITB stuff. What I am learning is that I am an ITB guy for a few reasons. And without going into great detail as to why...
My question is this: Is there a system/protocol in place to transfer digital audio back-n-forth between PC/Mac/Linux and not turn it into an analog signal first?
For instance: I run a DAW, for sequencing and mixing, on one computer and run a bunch instruments or fx on another. And ideally on a network I could have a few of these machines providing the muscle while the 1st computer is the brains. In addition I would hope that such as system would allow a healthy number of channels (16 or more) to go back and forth across whatever the connection. My thought about keeping the signal digital is that it would/should cut out the need for DACs and the introduction of possible noise. And also have the bandwidth for many channels. Almost like Elektron's over-bridge but for any computer(s).
Does such a thing exist? If so can you point me in the right direction so I can read up on it and see if it fits my needs?
