Cubase - change tempo / playback speed with external controllers?

Has anyone ever managed to change playback speed in Cubase with an external MIDI controller? It's really clumsy to do this with the mouse on the little arrows for the tempo Cubase has to offer and I couldn't do it with "MIDI learn" or "Quick Controls". It's also clumsy to do it with the pencil on a tempo track automation while playing back audio.
Is it possibe to do this with a proper external knob or slider at all?

( I'm currently starting to get to know all those functions in Cubase better.
Cubase has some incredibly powerful functions which are great (Time Warp, VariAudio, The sampler...) but some particular things SHOULD really be improved in terms of being more user-friendly or obvious to be set up I think.
Hope that they would realize this one day - eventually. :idea: )
