Hey there. Every once in a while I contort some sounds in ways that make it seem like voices might be coming through them, saying something. I haven't saved them, but just now, it happened again, (from about 0:07 to 0:40):

https://soundcloud.com/fritz-e-18766441 ... purr-growl

It must happen to others here. But what if it's another parallel dimension bleeding in? Or the dead trying to say something? Or a ripple in the fabric of time from the past or future? The above was from messing around with Steinberg's Backbone, using a file from the Catstrument thing I got a bit ago from 8dio. Maybe it's just that cats are indeed of supreme intelligence. Figuring out what they are saying might be crucial, as they likely would be plotting to destroy or enslave us. Maybe it's a countdown code, like in Independence Day.

I have yet to decipher any actual words, but maybe post here if you have anything.

Please post here any sounds you have made that might contain messages woven in the fabric of reality. Peace.

Great topic!

EVP or Electronic Voice Phenomena is very interesting. I think the first examples of this were purposefully constructed using an early vocoder but the phenomena can happen with other material that might seem less obvious due to our unconscious thirst for pattern recognition. Essentially, a side-effect of having a human brain.

I do experience this from time to time. And there are certainly processes that seem to coax voices out of sound but this is mostly through filtering around frequencies that are some harmonic from a fundamental that might be expected in the human voice. I guess that such frequencies trigger a requirement for our brains to start working a little harder to make sense of what it is hearing.

If it sounds like a speech pattern then we focus even further around those frequencies so they sound like a voice. All this focus and recognition happening quite instantly, in real time. Then, if we deliberately focus and try to make sense of it, we might attempt to match known words and phrases.

I don't think I have any examples on this PC but I used to play around with it and some synth patches I've made could possibly contain voices. But indeed, everyone will hear something different so some people might be more prone to extracting voice-like information than others.

I dont hear actual voices, but a lot of times I do hear kind of a personality in sounds Im working. Or like a certain tone to the communication.
A whole lot of the sounds I make have parameters that continuously change. I like to leave them free running, and not render any static wavs to arrange with, usually. And sometimes when Im nudging the sound and movement around and fitting it to a track its like Im pushing the personality behind that sound into a mood or something like that.

There is a formant knob in Backbone. That may have something to do with it.

Its basically auditory apophenia, the equivalent of pareidolia which is visual, and includes seeing faces in things like rocks and trees.

The human brain evolved to recognise and identify familiar patterns. Visually, as a social animal, faces are one of the most important things for us to identify, and we do so even when they're things that look like faces instead of being actual faces.

Image

(If we couldnt do that, abstractions of faces like cartoons and emojis wouldnt exist)

Recognising human vocal communication is equally important. Even our hearing is tuned to operate best in the frequency range of speech. And our brain automatically can do a massive amount of extraction of noise from sounds in order to track someone speaking (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocktail_party_effect).

So its no wonder that we have an audio equivalent of seeing things that resemble faces, that we sometimes can hear voice-like sounds in complex sound sources. But in the same way that a pebble that resembles a face is not actually a face, its a mistake to categorise sounds which resemble voices (or other familiar sounds) as being that thing.

ie, no, that wasnt jesus in your toast, or ghosts in your alleged 'EVP'.

Similar question;
How often do you guys hear your ringtone while doing sound design?

I have a distinctive ringtone that I made, and Ive noticed my brain is SO sensitive to that sound now, itll go way out of its way to hear even tiny ms pieces of it in other stuff.
So Im deep in a synth, and my brain says, 'wooooah, is that a phone call..?', and Im confused, and I kind of answer myself, 'no dude, thats e.g. the tail of a snare mixed with the reverb off the vocal, with this weird osc and envelope...'

Similar phenomenon to EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon) where people talk to "ghosts" and record the ambient static then when they play it back, they think the "ghost" is answering their questions. Sometimes it can seem really realistic.

in 1994 i wrote my first lyrical song generator, which used two BASIC programs, dice rolls to select which floppy and sound slot to use for voices, and took a day to assemble a song to tape, especially because i had phonemes recorded on a 8 bit ensoniq mirage, and pitch shifted them with a boss se-50 in realtime (fast button clicking), easier because the vowels were split into three layers. i recorded 9?? songs this way, with interesting, ominous themes like "pray for that i should only have your houses". i've done a lot of work with procedural music and synthesis since then and have a bit of a rep around here already especially with people who like to talk about other people a lot.

i can direct you to many recordings with "alarmingly coherent" transduction of speech made by a variety of methods, any procedural/stochastic method, w.s. burroughs wrote "when you cut into the present, the future leaks through" of his cut-up method, a conversation which has played itself across these boards for decades and now provides me with convenient finger exercise.

in 2018 i made a few vst using geometric oscillator designs with feedback paths, "chaos oscillators", and i think, decidedly, since that point, i am so freaking tired of someone talking through my experimental synthesis every time i turn dang thing on. do you want to be that? do you want to be me? enjoy your nescience. go watch some "you do NOT want to open your third eye" videos on youtube.

perhaps demons are in everything if you listen to them real good. but if you listen to the song continuation of eminem rap god, you'll hear the story of how he got all that cocaine (if you understand a little spanish). these folks don't want you knowing how to slice through the universe, and you don't either. you'd stand out some.

go play with the psytrance dudes.

and if you ever do become sensitive, to anything, ever, that other people aren't,
don't fing let anyone know, because, they'll twist the handle

what's left of me now?

its the voices of dead pop stars, who dont realise theyre dead.
keep singing and it leaks in to new modern equipment, that doesnt have the spirit filters of clockwork gear.

In the house I am in now, the bedroom is near the main air handler. Once that kicks on at night for the air conditioner, I have had several times when I "hear" murmuring type voices, like a quiet, distant talking or conversation in the background of the air conditioner. It sounds very real, especially if I had just been falling asleep and it woke me out of it. The "voices" just sound almost radio-like, but not understandable. It sounds like language, but it isn't. Just probably some weird frequencies mixed in the white-ish noise of the air conditioner. My girlfriend hadn't heard it all ever, but once I explained it and had her try to hear it, now she does too, LOL! Now she is mad at me when she hears it :hihi:
